Can Fire belly newts of any kind swallow a nickel sized rock or bigger? A nickel is about an 1 inche in diameter. The rocks are river stones so they're rounded. The nickel sized ones are the smallest in the bag. The biggest ones are the size of a half dollar, which is about 2 inches in diameter. Can a newt swallow those? Hope I get some answers before Friday.

Ok, i've had this up for a little under a week and I'm starting to get impatient. Someone please help me!!! I need the help before Friday, because I plan on going and getting the whole setup for one of the little buggers. I just need help with substrate!!! Please. :-(

How will a newt with a head the size of a large pea
be able to swallow an inch big rock?

Stupid question really

I don't know! I've never had any before and I just wanted to make sure that they didn't have the powers of Mr. Fantastic or something. I kinda had a feeling that this was a stupid question, but I asked it anyway hoping for answers and help but I get typed at angrily for using this forum the way it was intended to be used. Jeez. :X

Oh no :( Dont take it the wrong way!

Thats why I put a smiley lol

At least your asking about wether or not it would be a problem,
rarther then posting saying your fb newt has just swallowed a piece
of gravel ect

Actually, they do, a bit. They've got wide, stretchy mouths and can open their jaws wide enough to swallow stuff almost as big as their head.

It's unlikely they would deliberately eat something. I was warned by my seller and my vet to avoid small gravel, like the common small 'Dorset Pea gravel' we use in England, as that can easily be swallowed along with food like bloodworms. My vet said he'd had quite a few newts with impacted gravel.

P.S. I didn't answer because I'm a big sissy and was hoping someone with more newt experience would answer.
