I'm wanting to do a setup for a fresh water turtle or 2... Not sure which ones yet. Iv not found much online about them so researching them is proving harder than I thought.

What I want to know is how do I set up the tank to make it turtle friendly? Lights? Heater? Decor?

Any info will be appreciated :)

I keep turtles. They are not too hard to care for, so I can tell you the basics.

1. Habitat.
Depending on the species, you can keep them in a range of tanks. The best one is the red eared slider. You should give him a 50 gallon minimum tank.
2. Equipment.
Heat lamps. You need at. A heat lamp/UVB lamp. A log for a basking spot is good.
3 set p. the tank should be long.fll it half way with water. Add the basking spots. Decor isn't too important, you can put a few logs in the tank.
4 food
When I have baby turtles, I feed them crickets. You should feed them veggies and stuff too.
5. The law. DO NOT buy baby turtles with a shell diameter of less then four inches. It is illegal.

Tomorrow, I'll find you a link. But for now, I'm logging off.

Hope this helps! :good:

Yes this helps. The tank I had in mind though is only 40 gallon :(

Only ones iv seen for sale in my lfs are map turtles, red eared sliders and one other 1 but can't for the life of me remember what it was.

Thanks

You can use a 40 gallon unil the turtle looks like he is cramped. Here is the link as promised

Red eared slider care
A word of advice, ou might want to consider getting a pond for the turle once he is full grown.

Hope this helps! :good:

Thanks for the link. I think red eared sliders may get too big and I don't really want a pond so I'm think of getting a musk turtle instead. Iv seen a few places that a pair can be kept in a 36x18x12w. They would be a better choice

Let me move this to the right section for you. I will leave behind a link so you can find it again.

I have one Red Eared Slider in a 55 Gallon, make sure you keep them in a tank large enough for some swimming room. Also they like to burrow in gravel if they get cold so make sure you keep the water from getting cold and a basking area.

Thanks for the replies. I went for a male Mississippi map instead (kohnii). They only get to 5 inch at a push so is more suited to my tank. He has a decent internal filter at the moment but no doubt il get an external canister soon. The tank had sand but will prob be changed to gravel (big enough so he doesn't swallow it). He has a basking area made from rocks but I'm on the look out for a floating platform. Also bought a uv light and a heater.

Thank you :)
