hey guys. earlier this week I went to get ONE pleco 'cause i didn't have a catfish (no good results with chinese or gold algae eaters)...
i went in and asked for the biggest, blackest one they had at the nearest LFS that I visit at least once a week...anyways, ended up with this guy:

he's about 4-5" right now. doesn't do much during the day, but at night he has taken ownership i guess of my biggest rock. he seems to be laboring at it but he hasn't "cleaned it off" as i read online would happen overnight...
I was told it was a "common pleco". i'm very anal with these things and i'm trying to get a definite ID with a scientific name to go with it...any ideas?

as I said before, I went in to get ONE, but then I saw this little guy and I had to have him. i was buying with a store credit from a couple of returned fish so it wasn't costing me anything, and I just loved him.

this one is about 2-2.5" only. his spot is my bigger bog wood. while he rests a lot during the day, he's much more active at cleaning the wood during the day than the bigger pleco is with his rock...and he's also done a much better job. the wood almost looks like new now!
i was told it was an "albino chocolate pleco" but online pictures don't match up to this guy.
what type of pleco is he? common/scientific name?

what size will each of them grow to? is there any chance of them becoming aggressive to other fish? to each other? seeing as the black one is my biggest fish - they don't have a penchant for neon tetras do they?
last question...why do they poop so much?! the smaller one has the entire gravel surrounding the wood he lives/works on full of his poop...i might have to do an early water change just to vacuum their poop
any other recommendations/suggestions/tips you would like to share with me regarding these guys?

thanks for your help :good:

the first one is a common pleco of some kind, will reach well over 12".
the second is a clown plec, L104, will only reach 3-4", its a wood eater and will poop almost as much wood as it eats lol.

by wood eater, do you mean he'll eat my drift wood entirely or that he'll eat the top layer of the wood, thereby cleaning it in the process and then stop? if so, then he can poop all he wants. i'll vacuum once a week :hyper: he's beautiful, and if he's gonna stay under 4" that's great news for me.
now i have to figure out how to "prepare" vegetables for them...

the common pleco will get that big huh? maybe i'll trade it for a smaller pleco now that I found your list of 8" or less plecos

any recommendations? i really liked the L46 Zebra pleco but aquabid only seems to be selling those in breeding groups...

EDIT: after some more research it seems the zebra is nice and small but very expensive and very much out of stock everywhere...maybe next year after i'm more experienced i'll consider droppined $300+ on one fish...for now, i'll have to consider cheaper options!

EDIT2: I think I might give the Farlowella a second try. I thought they looked amazing the first time i got one, but somehow my first one died the very first day or the following day a very violent death. he was shaking and convulsing, and seemed as if his blood vessels had burst or something...i'm thinking somewhere along the process of netting him in the store, and then at home he got injured? i'm gonna give them a second try in exchange for the common pleco and see what happens!

btw, i'm really going to need to know if the clown pleco is just going to eat off the wood or eat the wood itself...'cause the wood is a big part of my decor and I wouldnt want him to devour it and just leave me an empty space there!
