Ok so back in january when I was a total newbie to keeping fish I bought a tank and it came with 2 corys, I knew nothing about corys and decided that they were just bronze. Few weeks down the line I buy 2 bronze to up the numbers and that's when I notice the big difference in colour, so I posted on here about what exactly the 2 corys were.

A few people said that they were c.melanotaenia, and after having a look at pics online I figured, yeah they do look similar so that's what they must be. Then saturday I went to maidenhead aquatics and enjoyed a very nice tour of the shop courtesy of tim(timmystood on here) and they had wild c.melanotaenia, so I took a look and well now I don't think that's what I have, the body shape was completely different, the colours were very dull compared to mine. So then I thought well maybe wild & tank bred do have some differences such as colouring and body shape. They have the basic colouring of c.melanotaenia but their fins(esp. one of them) are an intense yellow colour, they are shorter(height wise), longer(in length obv.) and thinner then the wild melanotaenia I saw at the shop.

Here are some pics of them, not the best quality but you get the idea of the colours / shape(although the camera doesn't do them justice as in real life the yellow on the fins is very intense).

I'm desperate to find out what they are for definate so I can get some more of them, they do hang out with the bronze, I've even seen one of them attempt to breed with a bronze so they are happy but I would love more of them as they are so beautiful!

Green, Gold Lazers, Bronze, Hybrids of them?

Brochi ones?

 Exactly, in all the photos I've seen of various corys they look a little like golds, sometimes like greens, a little like melanotaenia, it's a real mystery to me. I guess they could be hybrids, but of what exactly :dunno: Hopefully someone can identify them, if not they'll just have to make do with the bronze, they are happy enough, would just be nice to know what they are :D

They are most definitely C. melanotaenia, like most species there will be variation due to the conditions they live in. Also there will be slight differences in appearance from different populations.

Freshly imported specimens will certainly be less colourful that those that have been in a settled environment for a while.

Hi Azaezl :)

The common name, often used for C. melanotaenia, is green-gold. :D
