Is it better to get a male or female betta? I heard you can put two females together sometimes? Ive got a five gallon tank. Any good tankmates for bettas?

:hi: to the forum. I'm not sure if you've already introduced yourself. If you haven't, do so in the newbie section. :D

For a five gallon tank you might have problems with 2 females because they're still territorial. In such a small tank they migth attack each other.

A male might be good in there.

Tank mates: livebearers, ghost shrimp, African dwarf frog

Ok thanks-I introduced myself now.
So could have like a male betta and three mollies?? Or would it be better to just do a betta.

I have two female bettas in my ten gallon with a couple black tetras and a couple cories, they do just fine together.. in fact, I think they are good buddies :)
Just be careful with the boys, there's lots of fish that'll attack them, and injury leads to infection.

white cloud minnows are great. well, mine are anyway. IF the betta for some reason decides to pick on the minnows, they're too fast for him anyway. but i've only seen him flare at them once, when i first put him in. they keep to their own, and the betta doesn't mind them at all now. at walmart, it's recommended that you buy 5 or more minnows, cuz they swim in groups. i have three, and they rarely leave eachother.
