Hi can anyone help?

My new tank is only 8 days old.

and i am currently stocking it with plants.

Tonight i have just seen a fry swimming about (it's about 7mm) an egg must have come with the plants or something!?

I obviously want to try and raise the fry... what should i do?

As it is a new tank i only have some Siamese fox's in at the moment so no food is going into the tank.

Should i catch the fry in a breed trap and feed it ... or should i leave it as it was in the tank (as it has already lived this way for about 7 days).

Please help!

Thanks, Tango.

Hello Tango and welcome to the forum. :hi:

How lucky you are to have a little fry to raise! :D I would put it into a breeding net to avoid having it get sucked into the filter.

Do you have any idea what kind of fish it could be?

i think fry are pretty fussy about water conditions and since the tank has only been running for 8 days, the water won't be too good. :/

when it's big enough, you've got to identify it, as it could turn out to be violent, territorial or just too big for your tank

as for feeding, you could crumble a flake really small between your fingers, or you could just leave it (it's survived so far). -_-

like inchworm said, a breeding net is probably advisable

and congratulations on the fry :)

is ur tank fully cycled? if its not then the baby fish may die due to ammonia/nitrite poisoning

i know a number of lfs put fish in with the plants,so the fry isn't too surprising. but as said, be careful. when its large enough to identify, do so, in case it turns out to be something you can't keep in your current tank community/size. i'd separate it and feed it crushed up flakes too, or fry food since you don't know what it is. hopefully, if your tank isn't cycled yet, it will survive.

Hi Thanks for the replies.

I think i will transfer him to my other established tank and have him in the breeder trap (as he will probably get eaten up otherwise :)

Not sure what the fry is... it's quite long and black red and has quite big eyes for it size.

I'll let you all know how he get's on ;)

Tango.

oh good, you have an established tank too. good idea there. keep us posted as to what it is if he makes it, i'm curious now :)

Hi Tango :)

That fry is lucky to have a home with an experienced fishkeeper.

Now, about the new tank....... Did you take any steps to accelerate the cycling process by moving bacteria from the first tank into it? (I just ask because many people don't realize you can do this.)

BTW, what other fish do you have?

Hi Inchworm,

No, i haven't accelerated the cycling process, i'm setting up a show tank for discus so i'm going to establish the plants and tank for a good 2-3 months.

My other tank is a 70 litre which has 7 leopard danios 10 cardinal tetra's, 1 Siamese fighter and 'Tango' an Orange loach type algae eater thing that's very lazy ;)

Tango.

Hmmm........discus. I'm impressed! :D

well, at least you don't have to take him back to the lfs for being too big/evil!! ;)
