I just got a 10 gallon tank, filled it with rock that i bought then boiled to clean, a couple decorations, also boiled to clean. hen added water. Waited 2 days then got fish. The water is now milky, and my fish are at the surface, what's goin on?

Change AT LEAST 75% of your water, get yourself a liquid based water test kit (API Master Test Kit are really good, search Ebay), whilt waiting for said test kit to arrive read and research the 'fish-in' cycle information in the begginers section, do test and put your results up on here.

Terry.

Did my test with the API master test kit. pH was 7ish, ammonia was 0, nitrite was 0, and nitrate was 0. Water is just cloudy and they are at the surface. I took about 1/2 gallon of water out so the filter made air bubbles in the water to see if that would aerate the water better. My guppies seem to be doing better but the mollies are still at the surface.

You might have missed the part about a 75% water change. Do it now!

I think something's amiss with your tests. How old are they? How are the fish acting after the change?

I bought the test kit today. They are acting better only surfacing once in awhile...is this normal for mollies and guppies?

I did read the fish-in cycling. I have been testing twice a day and im getting the roughly the same results. pH around 7.2 and all others at 0. Checked on them this moirning and they seem to be doing fine. My marble mollie still at the surface a little but that's it.

This just sounds like you need more aeration in the tank. The bacterial bloom (assuming it is that) can use up significant amounts of oxygen and if your tank is fully stocked or overstocked (how many fish do you have) then you'll get this hanging at the surface behaviour. It would help to increase the agitation of the surface by using an air stone and you could slowly drop the temperature a degree or two (if the fish can take that temperature).

However, be prepared for rising ammonia levels and then you'll need to change the water to keep this and nitrite, when it eventually appears, under 0.25ppm. Read up on fish in cycling.

Aeration could be the problem, but with triple zeroes, either your tests are wrong or you're not cycled. Whether you're cycled or uncycled, you'd expect to see at least one of the three.

Reading about fish-in cycling is no good, you need to act on the information you read as well.

Added a air stone, after coming home to a dead guppy and marble mollie. Both of them were the ones hangin at the top. The others look great, swimming around alot and they just look better. I got a 10 gallon tank, aqua-tech 5-15 filer, air stone and about 1.5 inches of rock. With a pleco, 3 male guppies and a silver mollie.

what kind of pleco is it? if it is a common then it isnt the best choice for your tank, and will easily outgrow it reaching a whooping 2 feet
