hello all..
i got a nano tank like month ago and bought some LR and a frined of mine gave me some of his LR as well. placed them in the tank and filled with premixed water from the LFS. things seemed to be going like it should and like the faq section said. then the tank started to smell and i thought its the die off smell but it never got better and toke a water sample to the LFS to test and he told me the s.g is way too low. went back home added some salt and in like couple of hours the smell went away. had to leave the house for a trip and came back to find hair algae all over the tank. yes i forgot the lights on. toke the rocks out and changed the water and placed them back in the tank. the water is clear NO2 spiked but went away its almost 0 now but the NO3 levels is way too high. the hair algae is coming back and frankly i am out of ideas and knowledge how to handle this. i dont know the size in gallons but its nearly 45cm x 30cm x 40cm. i have bioballs, crushed corals, and nearly 20kgs of LR in the tank. water temp is 26 to 25c and sg is 1.023

can any one tell me what to do about the no3 high levels? i am really giving up. :shout:

sorry for the long post and thank you all in advance..

How frequently and how much water are you changing?

Where is your water coming from?

What are the NO3 levels?

Do you any nitrate removal products?

It doesn't sound too much to worry about assuming there is no stock in there, but we do need some more info to help you out.

i changed the water once after i came back from my trip. i didnt do any partial water changes.
all the water i got is from the LFS saltwater tank.
NO3 levels 50mg/l
not using any nitrate removal product.

Well it's still early days and there's no reason to panic.

First thing I would recommend you do is buy an RO filter, anything you spend now will be quickly recouped when you're going weekly water changes.

As there is nothing currently living in the tank (other than the algae :p) I'd do a largish water change, 30 - 40 %, making sure that the water you are adding is nitrate free and then monitor the levels, which should start to drop of their own accord.
