Hey guys, I have a 20g high stocked with about 7 corys and 3 livebearers. Right now (and for the past year) I'm running an Aqua Clear 50 Power Filter but it has started to leak somehow. I need to buy a new filter but I was thinking....is there a better filter that I can buy, like maybe another brand that you guys know it real good? I'm going right after work to Petco. I value your opinions. Thanks.

I hardly know anything about filters, but my aquaclear 200 is awesome and really does the job. But, there are tons of brands out there.

I would have suggested an Eheim 2213, but probably not an external filter brand easily available in the USA.

If you want to invest a liitle more, go with an Eheim Classic 2213.

I don't think you'll find that at Petco, though.

For a HOB filter, I prefer the aquaclear because I think they run smooth, and have endless media options, but I do have an Emperor 280 that is still running strong after about 7 years. The drawbacks to the Emperor is they are louder (especially at first) than your AC, and will cause more surface disturbance (if you are into planted tanks).

BTW - Petco is overpriced. If you're near a Petsmart, you can bring in a printed copy of the item from their website, and they will match their internet price.

EDIT - bloo beat me to it on the Ehiem, and she's right, your best bet is to order it online.

I've replaced my Whisper filters with Aquaclear 70s , which seem to work better for me , for my 50 , and 29.
I still use Whisper 10s on small tanks.

Awwww man, are you serious? If I had only known about that sooner I would have saved heaps of money!

Yes but the cashier needs to call the manager to do it. Half the Petsmart employees don't know about it.
You can save some serious coin on filters and heaters. Here's the reciept from when I bought a 55g:
