you could go 1 Colomesus Asellus, any (?) breeding pair of the Carinotetradons, or 1 Tetradon biocellatus (Figure 8) if you're willing to go brackish

(somebody confirm this, 'k? ;) )

For someone just getting into fishkeeping, I maybe wouldn't recommend an SAP, as they will need a constant supply of snails and a good chance they will need to have dentistry performed.

Either Dwarfs or brackish for a Figure of 8 I think.

im sure snails will not be a problem, but holey moley, dentistry?

Snails are a few a week (I fe daily) and exclude malaysian trumpet snails, they're aren't suitable.

Yeah, dentisty basically means anaesthetising the fish every 6 months using clove oil, then clipping the teeth manually. You'd have to be quite confident to take it on. In saying that, I still fear the day I have to do it.

A pair of red-eyes(c.lorteti) would also be suitable, they're a little bigger than dwarfs and very pretty. Males & females look completely different.

I wouldn't reccomend SAs for the reasons given, and small brackish tanks are hard to maintain.

sounds good, so 2 then?

Yes, a pair - as in one of each gender bought at the same time.
These are terratorial in the extreme and will kill an unfamilar fish if introduced later on.

I'd recommend irrubesco over c.lorteti. While they're pretty indistinguishable, if you were to order them in, definitely ask for c.irrubesco as they're considered less aggressive.

Very true, I didn't mention them because they tend to be less easily available than C. lorteti in my experiance.

Plums, I was hoping it was the other way round, I'm contemplating a pair of irrubesco after xmas.

I know I haven't been on for a while, but I seem to recall 3 gallons being bit small for a DP. I'll bet that you get alot of swimming against the glass with a tank that small, why not move the DP and get it a buddy?

Where are you in the UK? If you're anywhere near Devon, then I have a pair of lortetis that I am looking to rehome at some point soon. Theyve been living alongside dwarf puffers in a 25g for the last year. However i want to set up a nano reef in the new year so have to free up some tank space

one thing i would say about my lortetis though is that they arent the most active puffers - mine tend to lurk amongst the plants and bogwood most of the time, venturing out at feeding time so you dont tend to see them a lot. If you want an active tank with lots going on then they might not be the best choice. Also the tank will need to be fairly heavily planted as they arent very tolerant of each other if theyre within eyesight

yes im in the UK, PM me with info/prices

EDIT: could you post? im in Buckinghamshire

to be honest wouldnt be too keen to post them really, firstly because its pretty cold and secondly cos ive never posted fish before and wouldnt like anything to happen to them.

price wise finding them a decent home is more of a priority, but they cost 6 quid each as juveniles and have grown to a nice size now so something towards them would be nice.
