I've got a new tank that is starting to build up on algae. I want to get a plec of some sort anyway; not primarily for algae eating, but it'd be nice if he would get rid of it while he's in there!!! Anyway, I don't want a common as they're too big. It's a 50g tank, and there are 2 rainbow Cichlids, and an Eartheater in there, so nothing too small!!
I was thinking about a Gold nugget as they are lovely fish, and relatively small (8-10" I've been told) but someone told me that they won't eat the algae at all! Is this true? I don't need it to go on an algae eating record attempt, just to keep it under control.
Anyway, any other plecs around that size that are a bit unusual and will eat a bit of algae???
Thanks

:D

I have a bunch of plecos and I find that none of them are all too serious about algae eatting. Get snails for that. Course, a single snail can reproduce to the point of insanity..

I like my albino bushy nose guys, they're small and quite energetic.. For you, a Rhino Pleco is probably your best bet. They're somewhat layed back, but can get quite active. They're also fairly friendly, but your cliclids won't hurt em. I wouldn't get a clown pleco. They stay quite small and they're good looking, but they're very very very timid, it's kind of annoying really.

I wouldn't get a gold nuggest only because they're expensive and there are many other just as interesting fish for much less.

Hope that helps,
J

Snails are no good as I simply don't want them, and I can't have shrimps for obvios reasons, so I fugured a plec was really my only algea eating option. Any better suggestions are welcome!!!
BTW the price of the Gold Nugget doesn't bother me. I can get them reasonably(ish!!) priced here.

get a bristlenose. they stay at about 5" and they eat algae. Wll, mine does but I dunno cos I only got him this morning but he has started already :)

Thats what my LFS said too, but he only had babies, and my eartheater would gobble them up in no time!!!!

I have a Clown and a Golden Nugget. Out of the two the Golden Nugget is the one that has done the most 'cleaning' of the glass and bogwood.

[See my post on 'Percy' for a picture of him :D ]
