:D hi everyone im new to this forum and new to keeping tropical fish! - just a few quick questions - it is a neccessity to have a air pump that produces bubbles in the tank - do they in any way benefit the fish or are they for purely aesthetic use?? also im looking for some recommendations of treatments to use in the tank - at the moment i am setting the tank up for a week before introducing any fish - i have added a sample of stress zyme which contains bacteria that came with the aquarium kit - is there any other treatments you would reccomend to use before introducing fish or treatments that need to be used as part of a weekly routine? i have also been given a sample of stress coat? not sure if i add this only when i get the fish any help would be much appreciated! thanks :hyper:

Have a look at this: http://fish.orbust.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8970
It may assist you and your question.
Aeration increases surface to water ratio and therefore increases the surface area of the tank. So I would say yes, it is a necessity. Stress Zyme is initially useless until you have a couple of fish in the tank, for around two weeks. Stress coat is only necessary if your fish are being or have been transported any distance and are STRESSED. You see all fish have a slime coating on it's body. This is a protective barrier against bacteria and pathogens. Under normal circumstances neither you nor the fish will ever know of its existance. During times of stress or trauma this coating is lost and that exposes the fish to all sorts of unwanted problems. Stress coat is an artifical method of assisting the fish to replace the coating. I hope that I have explained this well enough for you to understand.
Happy fishkeeping!

Stresscoat is also a dechlorinater and if that is the brand you choose to use should be added to the tapwater everytime you do a water change.
It is best IMO to use as few chemicals in the tank as possible and only treat fish with medications when you absolutely have to.

Hello Fishyfo and welcome. Before you add any fish in a weeks time, please please please read the link that Dragon posted.

I second that - please find out about Cycling your tank before you do another thing. And please don't buy anything on impulse - we're all done it but maybe you can learn from our mistakes.
