Anyone know what the pH of natural seawater fromt the ocean?

thats imposable to say because the ocean is huge, ph in the pacific is probably 8-8.5 im guessing :D

I use NSW. Mine is from the atlantic and the Gulf Stream hits our coastline directly here.
The PH of the sea in my area is a stable 8.3

Navarre do you get it right off a beach? Out of the bay? Or do you use a boat and go aways out to get the water? I thought about this option since i live only about 45 min from the pacific but have been told not to use NSW close to shore due to pollution. I live in oregon so the beach isn't really polluted, and i wouldn't be doing it for every WC, just if i happen to be heading to the beach i'd bring a 5 gal bucket or 2. Just wondering how its been going using NSW.

I get mine from the same location each time. Its in a bay and outside a harbour wall. (the harbour is a small fishing harbour and is tidal).

I can go past the harbour and there is a small dis-used jetty that is nearly always in deep water (spring low tides it can be shallow and difficult to retrieve water).

I always make sure that i get the water on the rising tide to make sure that its fresh sea water coming into the bay rather than water that has been there for some time.
As i have mentioned in other posts before, you should really test the water for each location as just a mile or so down the road can be a different st of results totally!

I made this mistake early on in keeping my tanks. My usual location was not accessible (the closed off that part of the village for a carnival) so i decided to go to a nearby location (about 8 miles away) and get water from there. I did this without testing the water and putit in my tank. Disaster struck  Within hours (literally) i had cyano covering all over the sand and rocks. It took weeks to get rid of this problem. After i nvestigation i discovered that a huge oil tanker had crashed on rocks there many years before and the oil had now sank under the sand in this area so it was very rich in nutrients :/

However, the area i get mine from is very clean and has been awarded with the European blue flag for cleanliness.

If you do wish to try out NSW then i strongly advise you test the ater first. then just do periodic water changes to see how things go. If the tank seems fine then increase these changes until you are happy.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your experiences, i think i'll stay away from the NSW. A large tanker sunk on our coast, well about 50 miles south, a few years ago. I think half of it is still sitting there waiting to be blown up. I have a LFS that sells RO water premixed also. I have been using that from the outset with no negative results. Only a buck a gallon so...... :)

A buck a gallon is expensive when you're talking 55. I use purified water from a reputable dealer by me.

Thats for sure, I use it for my 10 gal nano :p

For anything bigger I would definately have a RO/DI unit and mix my own. Much cheaper. And imagine hauling 55 gallons of water in your vehicle!!!

I've done it. It will all fit in the back of a 86 saab. :)
