Hey fish friends! So I don’t know if this is the right forum for this. But there’s a wildfire very close to my house. Im waiting to see what the fire does. Might not be evacuated today, but the power is likely to go out. Who knows when that’s going to get fixed given the circumstances. Any tips/tricks for the coming week if I lose power/need to evacuate? I have a 40 gal planted tank. It has a few tetras, corys, and snails in it right now. I’m just not sure what to do for an extended outage. I’d take absolutely any advice.

Also note: if it gets bad enough I’ll be losing cell service where I am as well.

thanks guys

Stay safe. Here's a link to a thread that could be helpful.
How to prepare for power outages

stay safe, i wish the best for you!!!!!!

In case you do lose power I would advise getting air pumps and wrapping the tank in blankets to keep the tank warm. In case of evacuation, pack the tank up. In all seriousness though if you are evacuated put your fish in a bag filled with aquarium water and some floating plants. Please stay safe.

Do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate every for a week or so during and after the fire to help dilute any smoke that gets into the water. The big daily water changes will also get the tank clean and means the fish should do better without power.
Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's added to the tank.

Clean the filter now so if the power does go off, the inside of the filter will be cleaner. Wash filter media/ materials in a bucket of tank water and re-use the media. Tip the bucket of dirty water on the lawn.

If the power does go off, take the filter media and put it in the aquarium to keep the filter bacteria alive.

Get some battery powered air pumps and some spare batteries, airline, and a couple of plastic multicoloured airstones to run in the tank if/ when there is no power.

Add some Activated Carbon to the filter to help remove any smoke from the water. You can buy air operated box filters that sit inside the aquarium and these can be filled with carbon and run off a battery air pump.

Cover the tank to stop smoke getting it.

Don't feed when the power goes off.

Battery powered air pumps, as mentioned above, should be a priority...there's lots of inexpensive ones on Amazon...or go to Walmart, in the sporting goods section, they sell them for bait tanks.
