I know we have a section for Nano-Reefs, why not a section for Nano-Trops aswell??

We seem to have so many people asking in Tropical Discussion, myself included, about fish for 10 gallon this and 5 gallon that. The topics and threads would be endless with the different equipment that you need and so forth for the Nanos.

They are great for people with limited space and limited budgets and if looked after well can be awesome. I am just in the process of setting up 5 nanos myself, all housing diferent types of trops and know that the hobby is leaning towards this type of fishkeeping more and more, so lets jump on the band-wagon quick smart and get this rolling!!

(I'll get down from my soapbox now!)

To be honest, even those nano's can be divided into the sections, there is not really any need for more sections it just makes everything more scattered and messy. Planted Nanos can go in the planted section, 5 gallon Betta tanks in the betta section and so on...

I think this is a good idea. Yes they could be split down into many sections but that wouldnt be needed. At the end of the day a lot of the questions that come up most often (which tank, what to stock it with, etc) will apply wether it is a planted tank or not so one section for all FW tropical nanos would be cool IMO. You could argue that we shouldnt have a marine nano section because then it could be split down to reef tanks, FO tanks, invert tanks, SPS, tanks, etc, etc.

I agree, my point entirely. I just think it would be great to think,"I have a 10 gallon, I can go to one place and get all info I need," whether it be oddballs, catfish, planted or whatever.

It would strip a lot of the thread out of other categories that people don't respond to because it has all been asked before and people can't be bothered!!

Any of the Mods care to comment??

I am sure between us we can come up with enough ideas to make this a success.

But those most knowledgeable about planted/oddballs/catfish etc tend not to frequent the general area. What makes you think they would frequent a general nano area?

So putting all the threads no one can be bothered to answer into a separate forum helps how?

As Ace has said, the nanos tend to have a focus, be it planted or keeping a betta or a small oddball fish. The questions on these set ups are far better off placed into the appropriate sub-forum that already exists IMHO.

I can see your point about the most knowledgable people and all that, but if we all thought about positives and gave solutions, not problems, then maybe something could be done.

I am sure there are nano experts out there, aswell as betta experts, plant experts and oddball experts. There are enough people that don't have room for massive tanks but still know what they are talking about. This would give those people the opportunity to talk about these topics and sho off their nowledge whereas they may not be able to as much in the main threads that maybe concentrate more on fish over 4" which would not be nano-uitable anyway!!

I know we have the newbie section also, but this could help them out a lot as we know how many people start with small tanks and we could provide valuable info all in one place!!

I say give it a go, we have nothing to lose!!

But if you dont consider the negatives at all and just ignore them completely, thats when problems happen. Ofc there is positives but in this case IMO the negatives out weigh the positives, there is already some sluggish area's (Oddball, Brackish etc) I really think after reading everything you've written that you havent gave any real reason for a nano area other then it would be cool. I think we should focus on idea's on the areas we have already....

Oddballs is a bit silly because predators have a whole section to themselves- there aren't a great deal of oddballs that don't come under the predator umbrella, not enough to really justify having a section for both.

You can't really make comparisons between FW and SW nanos- firstly in a forum context, we already have gazillions of subforums for FW that don't really get used, whereas SW only has a couple that get fairly high traffic because they are so general. In a fishkeeping context, keeping a FW nano doesn't have a lot of differences to a larger tank, apart from more limited fish choices, whereas SW nanos have a lot more to contend with. All the aspects, apart from the standard 'lols what can i put in a 10g', already have sections that are perfectly good as they are.
