I realize it's quite bare if you don't do corals. It's like a freshwater without plants, and I love my plants.

But considering the light costs invovled, as well as the cost and amintence of corals, what are some pros and cons?

Would it not be easier to maintain just live rock?
Would crashes happen less and algea not be as much of a pest?

My tank doesnt have any coral. The reason is becuase I really wanted a dwarf angelfish and most of them nip at corals. But honestly I think coral looks alot better than just LR. But youre right it is more expensive. I have never had coral so I dont know if it would be easier to maintain.

-Algae would possibly grow more, because more space and more light to utilise.

-LR + the limited number of fish you could have in a nano would be supremely boring.

-The cost of lighting for a nano can be extremly low, and depending on what coral species you want, it doesnt have to be anything extreme at all.

-Crashes dont happen at all if the system is goign fine. They happen when something fails or goes wrong. If you kept everything fine, regardless of what type of system, things should go fine. There is only a rise in risk of crashing if you buy an un-healthy coral, or one you know nothing about.

-The cost of some corals blwos many out of the game. But, depending on what you buy, they can be cheaper than most fish. I could buy one of 4 mushrooms, one or two leathers, or one softy for the price of one clownfish. Join a local reef club and you could get free frags! :good:

Thats cool that youre in a reef club. I wish I wasnt one of the only ppl in my town who own fish that are tropical. How do you get such cheap coral? And its not the cost of the coral its the lighting for me. Although I am thinking about getting the special lighting so I could get an anemone for my clown. Do you know alot about corals? And what would be some cheap affordable corals? Is this considered hijacking? If it is i am very sorry.

Mr Miagi, you would love my LFS, just cos of the ammount of mushrooms they have!!! Theyre the cheapest ive seen, even compared to ebay, and theres some which are large pieces of LR (about 6x5"ish) with two large mushrooms on, and then loads of zoanthids and other life all over them....Great shop.

To me, the whole point of a nano tank is the corals really....I mean, id want some other life in there, for something to watch, but i think they look nicest with corals. I would presume keeping corals is more maintenance than not, because you have to 'spot-feed' some corals, which i can imagine can be a right pain. But it looks worth it...

Ironically enough, if you have a large population of photosynthetic corals, it will be far easier to maintain nitrates in a nano than without. I dont mean to suggest that having a large photosynthetic coral load will help you get down to 0 nitrates, but a system with corals is more likely to have lower nitrates than one without corals.

Also, I'd have corals just cause they're soo stinkin cool to look at. Really amazing animals

yes, thanks a lot.

due to some unfortunate happenings, I'm ban from turning my tank saltwater for a year... for no apparent reason other than my mother's wishes.

therefore I'll have a year longer to save up money, study up on it, and so on. I suppose I'll be prepared enough.... I hope
