Hi i was wondering if anyone could tell me what fish one is please? I have just one of them (previously two) in a tank with three black phantom tetras. However it keeps nipping the fins of the black phantom tetras and chasing them around the tank (which i believe has caused the finrot). Does anyone have any advice please?

it is a tetra. A brighter and clearer pic would help determine which kind.

also, because there is just one it will do that, if you had 6 like you are supposed to it would be fine.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Sorry for the quality of the pic, not having much luck trying to get a better snap. The guy at the pet store seemed to think that two of them would be fine in an aquarium (one died). I'm just looking around trying to work out which type of tetra is it now. It has red fins and a blue uppter body. My aquarium is only 30 litres. Do you think if i got another one as a mate then the bullying problem would go away?

how many US gallons is 30 litters? Isnt it 10 gallons? If so, then I would say no tetras at all, unless they are neons.

It's kind of hard to tell it's color from the phots but it oculd be a serpae (orangish red with black dorsal fin and markings). They are very nippy, especially if less that 5 or 6. I started with 3 and they used to drive my corys crazy till I added 2 more. Even with 5, they still nip at the other fish from time to time.

Hmm.. Doesn't look like a serpae to me. Looks a bit like a Rosy Tetra. If it was a bit longer I'd say it was a pencil fish, but it's not.

Looks Like a Head and Tail Light Tetra,

Hi, thanks. In the light of what you have all said i think the best thing to do is to return this fish to the pet store and change it for a more suitable fish. I think i have been wrongly advised by the pet store with regards to suitable fish for a Biorb.

oh dear there they go again. selling really expensive bi-orbs to unsuspecting customer.

IMHO a betta is the only fish you should keep in a bi-orb.

????

The Wolf is right - pet shops are constantly trying to sell bi-orbs to new fish-keepers and claiming that they are excellent, good filtration, you can keep so many fish etc etc. In reality, the surface area to volume ratio is ridiculous when compared to a rectangular tank of the same capacity. The price is insane for a tank so small. The filtration seems to be good but you could get the same filtration in a rectangular tank and keep more fish. 7 gallons is just too small for schooling fish and most small fish are schooling fish. The space in a bi-orb for a fish to swim from one end to the other is tiny as well. Sure, you could keep some platies or guppies but in reality bi-orbs are not worth it. Just so know one points it out - yes, I do realise the aesthetic point of view, there are plenty of fish that would work etc etc. My point is not this, it is simply the fact that a bi-orb, compared to normal tanks of equal gallonage, are not suitable for most fish and are extremely expensive for their size.

And I think your tetra is a buenos aires and you've made the right descision with taking it back as they are well known for their nippy-ness. :p
