I got two mystery snails yesterday and accumulated them to the tanks. They were moving and sticking to the glass in the store, but they haven’t moved once since being home. The nerite snail is moving around everywhere. Could the mysteries be dead? How do I tell other than smell? They have no smell. I’m just concerned about them. Ones a blue and the others a black mystery snail.

Keep an eye on them for a few days but I would say they are just getting used to the water.

Just make sure they are turned on the side with their trap doors. Snails do hide in their shells sometimes. They do sleep. Also it can take up to 24 hours for the snail to acclimate to a new tank.

The smell test is the best way to tell if they are dead or alive.

Do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate. Clean the filter if it hasn't been done in the last 2 weeks. Make sure the pH is above 7.0 and the general hardness (GH) is above 150ppm.

To see if the snail is alive, hold it by the shell and gently try to pry open the operculum (trap door they use to seal themselves inside their shell). If the operculum opens and the snail comes out it is dead. If the snail pulls the operculum and holds it shut then it is alive.

Thank you! The day after I posted this they were up and moving around! I think they were just adjusting to the new water conditions. They like to come out at night more than day though for sure.
