Hi,
Hi, I have one Mystery Snail in a 55 gallon tank (altho I hope to get a few more over the next month or so) I feed my snail algea chips, cucumbers and lettuce. Are there any other foods you can suggest I can feed him? Would canned green beans be OK or should I buy fresh? Is it better if I feed him at night or is day feeding just fine?

Also, I am keeping him with 2 goldfishes and the water tenp is kept at 68 degrees. Is this too cold for my snail? I was looking up some info on Mystery snails today and they recommended keeping the water around 72. Is this just a recommendation or should I warm my water just a bit? I love my snail and wouldn't want to harm him by keeping the water too cold.

THanx so much for your help.

Hi,
What do you mean when you say Mystery snail? There are two species with different requirements often sold under this name, Apple snails (Pomacea species) and Trapdoor snails. Have a quick google to see which yours looks most like and I can advise you further.
Your diet sounds fine, and buy which ever beans are the cheapest, your snail would really be too bothered. Just make sure that they have not had any mollusciside sprayed on them.

Hey everyone,
I am not positive, but I think my snail is a Trapdoor snail. I am not sure but when reading on the Apples I see it says they will eat your plants and, so far, mine has yet to eat my plants. He goes onto them some times but doesn't seem to eat them.. In the pics on identifying Apples it says they have a "the tube like organ (siphon) used to breathe while staying submerged." I don't see one on my snail. So I am guessing I have a Trapdoor snail.

How can I tell? I googled pics of the two and they both look alike to me. I can send a pic if that would help. I also posted a couple pics of him in Fish and Aquarium pics under My New Baby

Thanx again for your help..

Ok, completely disregard my last post. He is definitely an apple snail. I just say that lil tube like organ...

Thanx again for your help!!

If you want a 100% confirmation can you get a picture of him from the side so you can see the 'steps' of his shell's whorls? If they're at a 90 degree angle from each other then it's definately a P. bridgesii.

applesnail.net 's species page has a diagram of what I'm talking about, along with a great variety of info. If you feel bothered it even tells you how to determine his sex.
