My 6 month old halfmoon betta has always been a spunky little guy with plenty of flare and personality. I change his 2 gallon tank every 5-7 days, without fail.

Two weeks ago he started lying on his silk plant more often.. And the only visible sign of trauma was a small notch appearing in his tail. He lives alone, so no issues with other fish. Within 48 hours he wasn't budging, and the notch in his tail was a bit larger. By this point I started treating him with a touch of Maracyn for fin rot.

This is where it gets weird. 24 hours later he was lying on his side at the bottom of his tank motionless, except for his poor little gills, gasping for air. At this point I added an airdrome to circulate oxygen through the water. STILL no visible signs of what could possibly affect him except for the notch in his tail and the telltale vertical stripes on his body, evidence of some sort of severe stress. Nothing on his skin, no swelling, nada.

I couldn't think of anything else to do but start him on a regimen of tetracycline and daily 25% water changes. For the next 5 days, he continued to lie on the bottom of the tank gasping for air. Any attempt to move on his part (usually after I gently tap on the side of the tank to check for a response) would result in him attempting to flop sideways through the water for a few inches before resting at the bottom again.

So, a very very sick fishie :(

but a week later, he's swimming around again, and eating.

The notch in his tail quadrupled in size, but stopped growing and is now showing evidence of regrowth.

Any ideas on this?

Do you have a filter in your tank? And a heater? All bettas need filters and heaters, and you should only change 25% of the water weekly. Can we get a picture?
