My tank is going into a spiral into horrable nightmare. These are my problems

1) I find dead baby plattie fry with white growths. :byebye:
2) My female plattie (6 months old) has white puffy rings around its eyes and
a part of its body what was formerly black is now RED!
3) I found a big ol' nasty snail on the side of the tank and snails = bad :angry:
4) I found a respbora tetra dead and bascially "glued" to one of my aquarium
rock forms (really nasty)
5) My big adult platie mother has a white spot on its back behind its head
I meen...I treat my fish very carefully. I fead them moderate rations. I have fish nets for the fry and I separate them from size so they dont pick on each other.

Tank specafication:
Ammonia = 0
Nitrate = 0
pH = 7
gH = fine
The tank is planted
20 gallons
12 hours of daylight
12 hours of night-time

I change water normally
I do gravel vacs every month (or every 2 weeks ..depends on how nastly the tank looks)

My tank has been great without a single problem and now POOF....problems :(

I treat my fish sooooo carefully.
I just dont know what to do :-(
If my fish get any sicker I herd you can put them to sleep with a safe natural method...but how do you do it?

:-( Please help :-(

sounds like fungus.Occurrence: Very common, affects all types of freshwater fish
Symptoms include: White, grey or brown cotton-wool like patches on fish's body and/or fins (can easily be confused with Columnaris disease). Goldfish eggs are also prone to fungus.
Caused by:
1. Damage to the slime coat on fish due to rough handling, wounds or other physical damage which allows free-floating fungal spores access to skin.
2. Secondary infection following attack by other diseases such as Ich, Finrot or Ulcers.
3. Sudden change of temperature, unhygenic tank conditions or poor water quality may increase likelihood of fish contracting fungus. Pond fish are more prone to fungal attack in spring following a sudden rise in temperature.
4. High quantities of decaying organic matter in the tank will increase number of fungal spores and make infection more likely.
Treatment: Remove affected fish to hospital tank if possible. Swabbing fungus patch with iodine may be sufficient to cure problem. If not, EITHER treat with fungicidal medication (e.g Jungle Fungus Eliminator in US, Anti-Fungus Remedy in UK) OR a .3% salt solution.
Precautions: Salt and medications affect the cycle so monitoring water quality during treatment is essential. If left untreated, fungus can spread very quickly and kill the fish.

you say you change the water normally how often is that? vaccuming the gravel should be done every time you change the water. hope this has helped

A sad update on my fish....
I had to uthinize my female guppy that was so dear to me.
I couldn't do it until I saw how horrable it was. He had 4 types of fungus on him.
It was truly horrable. I had to uthinize it in vodka. Im so sad.. :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye:

He was swimming in the vodka (1/2alcohol 1/2 water) while i was typing the last post.....HE JUST DIED WAHHHHHHH!:-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye: :-( :byebye:

:-( really sorry about your fish, but is alcohol the way to euthenize a fish? i have heard that clove oil for toothache is best but i will need to find out about dosage. Do you test your water for nitrites,nitrates, ammonia and ph. this will help if you have problems. how many fish are in the tank and which one is it?

Sorry to here about your troubles. I'd like to know a few more details though, as I'm not entirely convinced this is fungus yet.

The spots on the head of the platy mother, it is a small tiny white spot? Does it stick out at all, or is it flush with the body of the fish? Is it similar to any other spots you've seen on any other fish like your fry? Tiny white spots the size of a grain of sand are probably ich. If this is the case, that's quite treatable with Clout (1 tab/10G every day for 5-7 days). Is it perhaps a raised scale?

When was the test of your water taken? Was it after a water change? When you say you do water changes "normally," how often is that? I'd suggest anytime a fish dies or gets ill, immediately test for pH, Ammonia, & Nitrates. After removing the corpse and testing the water, do a minimum 20% water change. Test again several hours after the water change.

How long was that tetra missing before you found it? Dead fish usually cause your ammonia levels to rise, depending on how long it was decomposing. You also mention puffy rings around the eyes of a fish. Is it actually a puffy "fuzzy" substance? I'm wondering if it's perhaps popeye that that platy has. It makes a puffy ring like a blister around the eyes. Have a look at a closeup pic of popeye on a krib. Popeye is usually a secondary infection or caused by a temporary breakdown in water conditions. It can be treatable with something like maracyn. As for the black turning to red, the reddening could be the result of ectoparasitic damage, injury, irritation caused by pH flux, ammonia, or a viral infection.

As for the snail, I wouldn't worry yet. They're great scavengers, and I have had no prblems with any of the foreign ones I've brought in on variour plants. Ghost shrimp help clean up any baby snails, which surprised me when I first saw it.

With a few more details hopefully through the help of members here you can diagnose and eliminate your problem(s) before any more losses.

The test results were just b4 i found the problem.

Its it close to there body....very close it almost all the way "into" the skin
