Hows this a grown man crying because of fish

Aww I'm sorry Cossack

Do you have any ideas as to what might have caused the deaths?

To answer your worst-case scenario question...

Yes, you'll need to take everything out and bleach it. Once bleached, wash out with hot water (as hot as you can stand). Then wash it out again. Do this with the tank, gravel, decorations, filter, and equipment. I think if you have live plants you can soak them in water with aquarium salt. Once this is done, you can set everything back and start cycling again.

Once again, I'm sorry to hear about your fish. I hope your betta and dwarf make it.

Hi Cossack1977 :)

What happened to your fish? :dunno:

Don't plan to take apart your entire tank until find out what went wrong. A cycled tank is nothing to sneeze at.

What did your fish die of? Were there symptoms? Spots perhaps, or finrot? What went wrong?

Many things can be corrected and new fish added without resorting to drastic measures, but before you can get any answers, we have to know some details.

Sorry, I should have changed the tense of my answer to "you would need to..." instead of "you will need to." As Inch said, there's no need to take apart your tank yet.

1) no white spot anywhere.
2) some off the fish that died got fin rot within a few hours
3) dwarf gouramis ( no sign of anything)
4) no inflammed gills
5) no bloating
6) ALL FISH TRIED TO HANGD AROUND TOP OF WATER THOUGH (HMM WEIRED)
7) Tank heavily planted
8) First sign of distress turned on 2 air pump to push more air into water

Have treated by adding aquarium salt, melafix and pima fix. i think its to late though.

Fish went from perfect to dying within 1-2 hours

No sign of stress

I cant take it. Every thing was going so well.
Tank cycled like instantly. I tested water every 2 days myself and twice as week at the aquarium for about 7 weeks with no sign of amonium or nitrite.

I even managed to do what most people siad you couldn't that is keep a male betta in a comunity tank.

everything was working perfect

not sure if i want to start again
All fish were so tame. would eat out of my fingers. could pick up and dwarf gourami with bare hands if i wanted to. I will miss them

for those sort of symptoms and that size loss my thoughts are there's a possibility it could be some sort of poisoning .....aerosols, spray drift if you have windows open.

I am so sorry about your fish :( it's sad to lose one but to have this happen to a good conscientious fish keeper like yourself.

i strarted to think poisning as well. only problem house has been locked up so no windows open the the jebo tank has got an intergrated hood and filter assembly. with very little area for external air to get in only the filter has vent holes.

If i have to re-start the tank (ie. full rebuild ) is there any way to save it from going through i full re-cycle.

can i take out the filter sponges and noodles and say put them into a bucket of dechloranated water with a air pump and heater

or do i really have to start from scratch. ( there was over $300 of dead fish in one hit)

if you've done a recent w/change it could be worth checking out with the water company whether they've put any new addititives into the water or changed what they normally do. Our companies here change how they treat the water dependant on the season and the amount of rain. Are there any ornaments/rocks that could be leaching anything out into the tank?

The other thing is is you have a floating thermometer to check and make sure it is intact......heard recently of one being broken in the tank and all the fish dying from mercury poisoning.

If you do take the filter sponges etc out and put them into a bucket with pump etc if they were going to be there for more than a couple of hours I think you'd probably need to feed them to keep the bacteria alive ....the others will be able to help with this though

i am so sorry to hear about your loss, i wish i could say something to help.

I'm sorry about your fish. I don't think any disease could of killed them that fast. I think it was posioning of some form or another. Hydrogen sulfide produced by anerobic conditions in your gravel could of poisoned them; what sort of substrate did you have?

could it have been CO2 poinsoning if perhaps the light was left off for an extended period of time?

light run for 12hrs a day on a battery backup auto timer

awwww,Cossack :-( :-(

I read your thread a little while ago, the only thing I could come up with was a poison or perhaps a household cleaner, as already mentioned. No lysol or anything? Maybe your heater is cracked and they got a small shock? A new dechlorinator, anything?
