I have had this turtle seen I was four, so about 12 years now. I found it in the south-eastern part of Nova Scotia around Shelburne. I currently have it in a 40 or 50 gallon tank, I forget which one exactly. I recently got another fish tank and was very specific on the details, ph, enviroment, etc etc. I was then sitting around and noticed I was never like that with my turtle so started to look around online pertaining to how I should set up my tank for my painted turtle. Im finding alot of sites are saying that different species of turtles have different enviroments and water temps and so on. I have never had a heater, proper basking area, food or whatever because I have never thought about it that way. When I bought the new 40 or 50g for my turtle I bought a light for it so thats out of the way, and I also bought it a turtle ramp to bask in (Before I had two bricks and a little stone for it to climb up on). I recently (Just tonight) put in a heater for the water. Im wondering if it was fine living that long before, should I change it now. and im thinking about taking 1/3 of the tank and getting a glass separater, filling it with sand (So its flush with the water level so It can climb up on it) , and using the turtle ramp I have now so the turtle can go up on it and bask in the warmth and dryness of the light. Im wondering if this is ok to do, because I cant find the specific species of the turtle I have. I am also wondering what kind of turtle it is if anyone can help me identify it.
Thanks in advance.
