Last week I went on a small one day trip and when I got home I noticed that one of my fish in my ten gallon had died. I got out the net and went to flush him. My the time I got back to put the net away, I noticed that another one of my fish had died. I caught him and took a second look at my tank. Upon close examination I noticed that two more fish had died but they were practically skeletons and beyond recognition. I scooped them out and realizing that there was something seriously wrong with my tank, hurried ro move the remaing fish to other tanks. I took a water sample to Petsmart the next day and the clerk said that my nitrate levels were high but that it shouldn't have caused all of my fish to die like that.

So earlier this week I totally cleaned the tank out. I completely emptied it, put new gravel in and bought a new filter. I bought some large feeder goldfish to cycle it with...Hopefully everything will be okay with it now.

By purchasing everything new you have to start your cycle all over again. Ouch.

I wouldn't trust their test result you should have your own, are you sure the clerk didn't say NITRITE rather than NITRATE, either way you should test your self. If you don't know what happened before it could happen again and if you have your own tests you can moinitor the water.
