It just runs off the roof straight into the tanks no chance to pick up much of anything.
...except bird poo and rotting leaves and dead/rotting insects ;)

(And since seagull poo, especially, can strip paint of the car.....could be decidedly dodgy)

You are forgetting that Chernobyl contaminated a vast area of mainland Europe and it reached parts of the UK too. They still have no idea exactly how much of what had been released that night and over the next few weeks til they encased the reactor. The fire personnel were pouring water onto the reactor, as instructed, until those in the know realised that is the most dangerous thing anyone can do and had it changed to pouring sand via helicopters onto the raw core area. Had the water reached that raw core area, most of Europe would not actually exist now. (Excellent documentary on Smithsonian Channel that interviewed those who were there and who survived the blast - all of whom are subsequently dying from the after effects...its a harrowing documentary to watch tbh but also very informative about that accident)
No, I do have an idea. It was a passing light hearted remark. Off the cuff you may say. Not meant to be analyzed.

Gotta watch those 'off the cuff remarks'... ;)
They can easily land you in deep doo-doo. :D

Back to the iron, there WILL be all sorts of contaminants in that water, but, as I suggested, the dilution of 20,000 liters would be significant.

Fair enough but you cannot use that as an example of a bad water source as or a light hearted remark really cos it is literally still impacting areas now, all these years later....people are still dying from its effect. Touchy subject and certainly not light hearted tbh. Which I would think you now realise.

Just adds to your immune system. Why do you think the All Blacks are so good.

You have obviously been directly affected by Chernobyl and I am sorry that I have deeply offended you. That was not my intention.

Not an issue, I do have an itch in my right ear and a rash on my thigh, but that has nothing to do with the water.

Thank you, some body at long last gets my point. I almost thought the brick wall was to thick.

You are a winner, thank goodness we have a couple of people who sort of get it. I was starting to wonder.

Fairly insulting remarks as you are assuming most of us do not understand your point of view.

I think most of us understood your point that using water without chlorine or chloramine as best for doing weekly water changes as it benefits the livestock, it absolutely DOES and IS the best way in an ideal world but a lot of us do not have that luxury.

So we have to make do with what water supply we have and since most water supplies have chlorine added to make it safer for us but is not very safe for livestock in aquaria so hence we add dechlorinator to make this tap water safer for our livestock.

Most of us not have the sort of lifestyle that affords us to buy bottled water in large bulk for weekly water changes of a minimum of 40 litres or 10 US gallons or to move to an area where there is well or reservoir water or to set up a rainwater system where there is no need to have chlorine.

YOUR system of doing 25% weekly water changes without dechlorinator works for you, that’s great, fantastic and good for you but don’t try and force us to change our ways if this puts too great a financial burden or to make us feel guilty that we can not do these things for any number of reasons, so to use dechlorinator that has been tested, tried and proven to work safely as long as correct dosages given and common sense prevails.

I love this hobby and am not about to give up fishkeeping just because you disapprove of me using dechlorinator because I fear the likelihood of doing this may affect or even kill off my livestock if I was to start doing water changes without dechlorinator due to the levels of chlorine in my tap water.

I'd question the ethics of the plastic waste in using 100+ gallons of bottled water weekly. Can you get 1000g tanks delivered and the empties returned perhaps?
The empties go for recycling....collected fortnightly by the local council.

I have 5 aquariums, none over 20g. 50% water changes per week on each. Plus coffees for me :)

@AbbeysDad it has just occurred to me that you have completely ignored the Threads of @Animallover😍 and @Obsessed with fish, that is a pity. The fish in their tanks are in way more danger of dying than the fish being discussed in this Thread. I am sure that both of those members would appreciate your contribution to their fish tank success.
2 (or 3) WRONGS don't make a RIGHT! I spend a fair amount of time attempting to assist fellow hobbyists in proper fishkeeping - even created a website/blog of articles for that very purpose. But I don't examine every post in every category of this (or any other) discussion forum(s). If I had seen the member's posts that you referenced and felt they had it wrong, I would have responded to help them as well.

All of our water is collected from the roof of our house. It doesn't get better than that. Unless you live in Chernobyl or Detroit.

Corrugated iron roof, running into concrete underground tanks. we have 20k liters of storage ( we live in a rain forest ). it then runs through a simple sponge filter to the house. We drink and wash with that water, been here five years it is great.
And now you say you collect rain water!!! ... so of course you don't need a conditioner to dechlorinate !!
SAY WHAT?!?!

Recycling doesn't negate the waste of resources. From what I've heard most councils cannot recycle most plastics they just pay China to put it in their landfills because China charges less per ton than the UK charges for general waste landfills.

I'm not criticising so much as thinking aloud that there may be a way reduce your use of the plastic that is both cheaper and more convenient for you into the bargain. Tbh my idea of a supplier refilling or replacing a large tank of mineral water in the way that they do with fuel oil or calor gas is probably not possible anyway as I doubt anyone does it.

please don't pretend to take offense after watching a little documentary
my mother lived about 100 miles to chernobyl before being evacuated (but still has some serious health issues) and the joke didn't offend me at all

So this explains why you don't need a conditioner AND it also explains why you can't do any more than a 20% partial water change! Unpolluted rain water, like RO water, is too pure for most tropical fish and a large volume water change would quite possibly crash a tank.
Your posts have been deceptive by leaving out such an important detail.
