So i bought myself a second tank last week, i put the water during my weekly water change from my main tank in this tank to speed up the cycling process.

Initially the purpose of having a second tank was to put guppie fry in and to then separate the males from the females.

But today i finally set the tank up, decided to add 3 velvit blue shrimp and 2 kuhli loaches, got the lights on a 12 hour timer.

My main tank is 520L it's nice to have a tank where the shrimp are easy to find.

What do you think? should i add more kuhli loaches?
I will take a few more photos when the lights are back on.

Water from your old tank wont do a thing in speeding up your cycle

Have you moved over/pre cycled some established media to the new tank?

How come it wont make a difference? The only difference is the filter?

I waited a week i thought this would be enough time to establish the filter?

Nice looking tank! 😍

Thanks, the water should have cleared up by the time i get home on Wednesday i'll take some more photos.

I’ve read many sources, including some here, instructing one to use 50% of old tank water in new. Would this be for some other purpose then? Or plain wrong? I have transported hundreds of pounds of water across state borders.

Beneficial bacteria will grow on your filter media and other surfaces like your glass, rock, substrate, decorations etc

It doesnt grow in water so all your doing is filling your tank up with used/dirty water.

To speed up a cycle you could pop some established media in your new filter or some fishkeepers put some substrate from their other tanks in some tights/mesh bags then just take them out once the cycle is completed.

Maybe it has something to do with slowly acclimating the difference in pH?

I cant think of any benefits of using old tank water other than watering your house plants :)

Transferring fish quickly possibly
:dunno:

Ok thanks,

Hopefully everything is still alive when i get back home tomorrow evening.

I wont add anything else for a few weeks other than a few plants from my other tank.

You will need more than 2 Kuhli loaches, they are a shoaling species who take comfort in others if their own kind. Really lovely Tank though!
