Some may remember that i took on a guinea pig with mites that subsequently died, well i moved my rabbit to the guineas
hutch and now the rabbit has mites.
I spoke to the vet who assured me that it would be fine to put the rabbit in the hutch once the hutch had been scrubbed with disenfectant. I did this and let it dry out for a week. But the vet told me today that mites are indestructable and can dry out and come alive again so to speak. He also said that guinea mites aren't the same as the ones rabbits get although i am now not sure whether to believe him.
My rabbit had an injection today and i'm going back in two weeks for another but i'm worried because he isn't eating. From experience when rabbits stop eating its a bad sign.
Does anyone know of any recovery foods or tasty foods a sick rabbit may be tempted by?

This is a little late but I hope your bun is doing well. When my Fritz was a baby bun, he got really sick and we had to take him to the animal hospital. He needed to eat and they got him to with jarred baby food. We did carrots, squash, zucchini, and all the fruity kinds too. At first he was to sick to eat on his own so we had to syringe force feed him for the first 2 days. After that I would just put a couple spoonfuls in a bowl and he would slurp them up on his own. He's almost 2 now and for his "yummy" treat I give him a clementine. It was a try and see food and he absolutely LOVES them, he starts grunting when he smells it coming and devours it with much gusto. He also enjoys romaine or boston lettuce, carrot and celery tops, and sliced apples. Hope this helps and good luck with your bunny!

baby cereal and corn syrup< this is what a rabbit owner suggested to my friend when her rabbit was sick and it got better afterwards. I believe you mix some water in it as well and than feed with a syringe. I dont know whats in it that helps, but it did with my friends rabbit.

ear mites? if that's what it is, all you do is rub some vinegar in their ears until its gone. ear mites aren't anything big. if it's other kinds, i've never had to deal with them...sorry

Thanks for your replies, they are skin mites which he is still being treated for. He was barely eating anthing including all the fresh stuff he likes (broccoli stalk and parsley). Then the night of this post i filled his bowl with normal dried food as well as some carrot and radish along with these little biscuit treats he likes and covered his hutch over. I went to bed thinking that i would need to make a trip to Tesco the next day for some baby food to force fed him but when i woke up he had eaten his veg and the dry food! :hyper:
Anyway he has continued eating and is going back to the vet for further treatment on Saturday.
Thanks again!

Mites are species specific so he probably didn't get em from the guinea. A lot of times they have them from the petstore and you don't see a major outbreak until like a year down the road. Somethnig like a new bedding could have sparked it, some beddings are easier for them to live in then others.

I'm glad he's eating again, that's awesome :good:

What size hutch are you keeping him in? Make sure you keep the hutch especially clean, rabbits are prone to getting deseases or parasites from living in confined quarters, make sure you clean out his hutch once a week and make sure he has a good diet and is not in a stressful environment in any way.

Yea it came about the same time as a i changed the shop i buy my straw from so i figured it could have been that.
The vet told me that it wouldn't have been the same mites as the guinea. I was using the same straw for my current guinea pigs and they haven't go mites thankfully.
No offence Tokis but i am a responsible pet owner and fully understand the requirements of a rabbit but thanks all the same.
His hutch is four foot but very tall. He also has an outside run which he uses.
He looks to be on the road to recovery but he is going to the vets again on Saturday for more treatment.
:)
