my puffer looks like either a green spotted or a leopard from looking at the species list. cannot decide which he is. what do you all think? he (or she) is very non-aggressive and seems stress free. here's a photo of him (or her).

Nice link , If it's not a schoutetdeni aka "stanley pool puffer ", I think are fresh water ,then they are brackish .

I'm 99% certain that it's a t. nigroviridis Green spotted puffer (GSP)
Requires brackish water and is happy to live in full marine conditions as it matures (but doesn't have to)
If your LFS is able to find out where they came from, then ID is easy because the Spotted Congo is African and the GreenSpotted is Asian.

JFlowers- try not to refer to then as 'Congo puffers', the correct name is spotted congo puffers.

The Congo puffer is a very, very different fish indeed!

Common names... the cause of millions of fish misidentifications worldwide.

oh no! if it's a brackish then i am in trouble, as i haven't put any salt in my tank at all. my lfs owner didn't tell me to, but he may not have thought to tell me. puffy was in a fw tank with other puffers and i think some plecos.

i will try to take a better pic of puffy tonight and post, maybe that might make id'ing him easier? i will also ask my lfs owner if he knows if puffy is from africa or asia.

thanks all! -_-

well, my lfs owner wasn't in, but i checked the tank and all it said was 'spotted puffer'. hm. the person in there wasn't that knowledgable so i'll wait to ask the owner. meanwhile, puffy seems 'happy' and sure does eat a lot. haven't bought him snails yet -- am having trouble finding any -- but am thinking maybe ghost shrimp? would those be good for my puffer? they're crunchy LOL :D

It will love shrimp :D You can usually get your lfs to give you pest snails for nothing. I set up a snail breeding tank with golden apple snails and once there were a few generations of snails in the tank, moved my puffers in ;) , They only eat as much as they can, so there are allways baby snails available.

The shrimp will please your puffer, but are not a substitute for snails.

golden apple snails eh? ok, will try to find some, i've found 2 lfs's and 3 pet stores near me.

so, setting up your breeding tank for them. can you give me basic instructions so i don't have to keep trying to buy the snails?

thanks!
v ;)

My breeding tank was a spare 30 x 12 x 12 tank. It had had fish in till I got my 4' tank, so was cycled.

I put 4 golden apple snails in and 7 black apple snails (golden were pomacea bridgisii and the black I have since found out, were pomacea c. not sure of the exact spelling, hence the c. check http://www.applesnail.net something like canultia).

Over fed for several days and soon egg clutches were everywhere (they breed more if food is in abundance).

Cut down the feeding and big water change. Continue with a pinch of food a day (flake) and regular (normal) water changes. After four weeks the tank was full of snails. Time to move in the puffers :D

Damn, guys, if you need snails I'm quite happy to Tupperware the little b*stards and snailmail them to you!! Oh dear....they say you know you're going mad when you laugh at your own jokes and i just almost fell off my chair....

But seriously, puffer owners (of whom I am sooooo jealous) you can have weekly supplies of snails for the cost of a first class stamp - just pm me!

Sarah

BTW... your puffy is sooooooo cute!!!!!
