I need help in determing if she is pregnant and how long does she look like, we noticed the swelling on Sunday Night.
These are the pics-they were taken with my cell phone.

it's a little hard to tell from the pic (a bit grainy) but she def looks like she could have some babies on board, either that or u feed her pretty well. u will be able to tell if she continues to square out a bit more. u will also start to see a gravid spot, which appears as a dark spot above her anal fin. The gravid spot is the frys eyes developing behind the moms skin. the gestation period for a platy is about a month long. from the looks of the picture she is getting close, but u still have about a week or two. if u plan on moving her to another tank or breeding trap for birth i would wait until she looks about ready to pop. if u leave her in the main tank, most of the fry will get eaten. good luck and keep us posted.

Hello all; new poster here.

I have read several threads here about how to tell if you livebearer is pregnant but I'd like some second opinions; I don't want to hijack the thread or anything but I figure my potentially pregnant fish is a platy and so this fits here too without having to start another thread.

Here are some pictures; I apologize if they are unclear:

Pabs, I first noticed how big she had gotten on Monday night. So on Tuesday I went and bought a breeder trap and I had her in there until last night; I was afraid to keep her in there any longer because it had been quite a few days and I didn't want to stress her out and have her abort. She still seems fairly mobile right now; she isn't hanging near the bottom or being inactive.

Going by the pictures how much longer do you think she has before she drops the fry?

And thanks for the kind words, Brimon. The father is a sunset platy so I'm really interested to see what colors the fry will be.

she looks likes shes getting pretty close shuvee. i'd a say within the week. i wouldnt keep her in a breeding trap all the time, only when ur not around to be able to watch her (like with work, school, or sleeping). otherwise u'll be able to see when she starts dropping fry and move her into the breeding trap right away. once she starts to become anti-social with the other fish and hide at the bottom, it's a pretty good sign that she's ready to drop. she also may stop feeding when the time gets close. keep an eye on her and if she starts to act a little strange, than it's a pretty good sign shes gonna drop and you should be prepared to move her into the breeding trap at the first sign of fry. if you move her into the trap to soon and leave her there for extended periods of time she will become stressed and abort the fry.

if you happen to catch her dropping fry, don't worry. scoop her up and move her into the trap along with the fry she has already dropped. once shes done leave her in for about an hour then move her back into the main tank so she doesn't eat her babies. good luck.

Ooo! Has she had her babies yet?

Not yet. :/ I check on her several times a day and while she looks huge she is still swimming around, eating and acting her normal social self.

Two nights ago after she hid in the plants near the bottom for a few hours I was sure she was going to drop the fry. I moved her into the breeder trap and went to bed but some fourteen hours later when I checked on her after I got home from work there were still no babies; so I let her back out. I don't know what to think other than the obvious, which is that she will drop them when she is good and ready.

But yes, I am getting awfully impatient. ;)

(And to add to the drama, I think one of my Glofish is pregnant too.)

u surely cant rush her on dropping fry, it'll only stress her and cause her to abort... i know it's hard but patience is key at this point in the game.

good luck and keep us posted!

Yeah, don't stress her too much. Sometimes it's better to let be a little bit.

As a matter of fact, Mom just gave birth a few hours ago to thirteen little guys. :) But she still looks pretty big; is it possible she could drop more in the next day or so?

(Will work on posting photos by tomorrow.)

congrats shuvee !

from what i've seen they normaly drop all their fry at one time. could just be a little baby fat, lol.
great to here she had a good bunch of fry.
make sure u leave them in the trap for a while or get some plants for them to hide in the main tank. how many do you want to keep? if ur looking to keep only a few u should release them soon and let nature take it's course. if you want all of them then leave them in the trap for a few weeks until they are bigger than the biggest fish's mouth. make sure u give them some plant in the trap and plenty of food.

good luck and keep us posted!

Actually I found a fourteenth fry swimming around in the tank this morning so I rescued him and put him in the trap with his siblings.

I talked to a pet store owner today about possibly selling some of the offspring pending their developing colors (mom is a blue tuxedo and dad is a sunset). I'd probably like to keep one or two for sentimental reasons. ;)

Thanks for all your help so far, Pabs. It's been very appreciated.
