Only one fry. . . that explains why her mother didn't eat yesterday! I recently bought a female marigold swordtail and she was indeed pregnant. Well, by the looks of her belly I thought she was in the early stages of pregnancy and didn't really think of her having the fry right away. I placed her in a small tank with an air pump and heater to be certain she wasn't carrying any disease. A few days past. . .she refused to eat any food I offered her.
Today, I removed her and was ready to release her into the main tank. After putting her in a bag and letting it float in the water, I suddenly realized she wasn't pregnant anymore! I raced over the small tank and saw one tiny orange baby huddled in the corner. Sadly, I knew the mother devoured the rest of her batch and this one tiny fry survived. Only one decoration was in the small tank and the fry didn't have any place to hide. I should have known she might have delivered her babies in the next few days, but she didn't look like she was ready. Now the baby swordtail is safe and has a new name. . . Precious.
AWWW!
Nice story, I had the same thing happen to me with a pineapple swordtail. She was being treated for tail rot and had her babies in the hospital tank. I didn't find out untill it was too late for most of the fry. Either they had been eaten, or the tail rot medicine had killed them, they also seemed a bit premature.
Good luck with the fry!
