My Plants Dieing :(

I bought 3 clumps of plants from the fish shop last weekend, i have no idea what they are but the nicest one is

it has leafs that are long ovals with a purple edge to them it looks great

my tank is gravel and i thought if i left them in there they would attempt to root in but i got up this morning to see the leafs are fading away in the middle of them.

i can not get any pics up as i have no internet at home, i know i can easily go buy another plant like this from the shop it was only £1.75 but it is a lovly colour green middle and bright purple on the outside edge of the leaf.

is there anything i can do to either root them plant better or stop this *rot* thats happening

That's a really tricky one without a picture! If you tell us the name of it, that would help.
