I know most male parrots are sterile, but my pair just laid eggs tonight for the first time. Is there something I should do or just leave them alone? How do I know if the eggs are fertilized or not? I have a green severum in with the parrots but don't know if it is male or female. The two parrots are guarding the eggs and won't let anyone near them. What color should the eggs be if they are fertilized? How long does it take for them to hatch if they would be fertilized?

I am so excited. Even if they don't get fertilized or hatch....just them laying eggs should mean they are happy and healthy in there tank and that makes me feel good. If they don't turn grey within the next few days do I remove them so the parents aren't so mean to everyone else? I don't even know if I have a male and female but they are both guarding the eggs, does that mean anything?

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Fertile eggs should be a tan colour and infertile eggs are clear and will slowly turn white.Usually with parrots when they start to go white they will eat them and if not you should remove them when fungus begins to cover them. You may have a male and female or sometimes 2 females will guard eggs too.Chances are nothing will come of it but it does show they are happy. My KK parrot will breed every 2 weeks or less. Its very rare for not to have either eggs or fry in the tank.I may even separate her from her mate to give her a break from breeding.

Thanks T for the info.

They are still protecting the eggs and fanning them, it is so neat to watch them do that. I have one more question for you.....females are the ones that have a tube (ovipositor?) or something right? A male wouldn't have the tube or anything coming out of the bottom of him? They don't have a gonopodium or anything like guppies or platy's? If that is true, then I think I have 2 females. One has a long tube coming out and the other one has a short tube. They are still young, only about 3-4 inches long from head to tip of tail so I was surprised they laid eggs already.

I have a green severum in the tank with them and he/she is only about 4 inches long to so must be pretty young yet. I have had all 3 fish for a few months and bought them when they were really small. How do I know if the severum is male or female? If it would be a male could he fertilize the eggs since a parrot is part severum anyway? How old would the severum be to be sexually mature?

Sorry, I guess that is more than 1 question lol. But I know from reading on the forum you have experience in breeding these fish right? It is fairly hard to find any info on these fish because most places I read don't really have an answer and if you ask anywhere else most people just bash you because you own parrots. I love my parrots and think they are awesome fish with great personalities.

Thanks,

Barb

Sounds like a male and female, males have thin pointed breeding tubes and females have fat longer tubes.

Male sevs have a lot more facial wormlike markings. I wouldnt pin your hopes on it breeding with the parrots though, I have never heard of a sev and parrot producing fry(although my big female parrot was paired with a gold sev until he died).Tbh I dont believe that parrots were produced using sevs anyway, more likely it was syn x midas/devil.

I have some experience with breeding them although with another male fish not another parrot.

Mine have bred twice in the couple of weeks I've had them - they guard them for a day or two, then the male eats them while the female looks horrified lol. She carried on laying for 2 days last time, kept adding to the pile, he had a good meal that time  And he still had room to snaffle the angels' eggs the same day!
