Wanted to share my latest purchase, a bargain 5-footer for £30 through gumtree...a 10mm glass self-build 466-litre capacity beauty... will soon be cycling with 2 Aquis 1200 ext. filters on their way from Rock Bottom Aquatics at another bargain price, just £71 each. Might be worth checking out as they have a discount on all of their 'older' version Aqua One filters if you are looking for a super-quiet machine.

I am now on cleaning detail, and will be soaking a load of mopani (another steal at £20 off Aq. Classified) by the end of the day if all goes according to schedule and the tank doesn't leak...

A nice find if you're not too bothered about the finish/look. Never really been attracted to those tanks, with the joins on the front :|

What are you chucking in this one?

before you do the cycle.....you might want to put it outside, fill it, and check for leaks over a day or two......always a good idea with 2nd hand tanks.

cleaned it; now painting the back a dark slate grey...I will be throwing in a catfish or ten, possibly lob in a couple of specimens...who knows! Dark colours with black sand again and the mopani wood for decor. Going for railed spotlights over the top if I can find suitable, no lid...thats as far as I have got with thoughts; probably change as it goes on...plants; low tech.

Know what you mean with joins at the front but I don't think they will be too noticeable once the tank has water in it, and anyway I will be looking at the fish!!

Thanks for that tip ZoddyZod but it gave me and NObody of the Goat a hilariously enjoyable time getting it up to the third floor - its staying put! The carpets could do with a wee clean anyway, though hopefully it won't come to that.

As to a theme; there won't be one i don't think, just a load of wood with a field of anubias perhaps? Its nice to play like this, with no fixed goal other than catfish which will feature big in here...

More pics will no doubt follow, and any suggestions welcomed along the way!

ahhhh, the possibility of you not living in a house hadn't entered my head!

Portsmouth is so densely populated you are lucky to get a shed!! Just cut hand on a small chip on the corner...if it gives me any more grief it'll be outside the quick way, 3 floors down out the window and onto the patio

Cool! You'll be able to get some big fishies in there. What did the wifey say? Did she know prior to the purchase or was it a case of small tank when she left replaced with a huge tank when she returned.

So you've been busy happy shopping for more bargains! (i need to shop where you're shopping). By the way i would taper that polystyrene back to the tank, it looks a bit unsightly.

Well anyway I can't wait to see this one progress - get scrubbing! :good:

Dean.

ahead of you there mate, polystyrene trimmed, back of tank drying for its third coat, then mopani and some water in to soak and check its watertight...

coming along; cleaned, polystyrene trimmed, back glass painted, edging trimmed and faced up...wood and water next!

water maybe tomorrow, out of time today!

Thanks FF04; my little canon does it no favours, it looks better in the real light, and will improve I'm sure when filled...

mmm, front glass needs a second clean methinks!
