Hi!

Lots of great info on these boards!

I recently acquired a tyre track- he can't be more than 4 or 5 inches. Very good eater, and very active too- he is out constantly, even during the brightest daylight hours.

He and a single tankmate (a white goldfish--long story) share a well planted 15H. Gram for gram, there is probably a little more goldfish than eel.

My question is how quickly can I expect my new fish to grow? I am aware he will reach a considerable size. I have run across one person's statement of having one 3 ft. in length after 5 years of ownership.

Although a bit smaller, he is already tormenting the goldfish. I have plans to move him soon, else we get nipped fins.
Thanks.

The spiny eels grow rather slowly, I would expect only an inch or so of growth every few months. ;)

Yes, they may not grow very quickly, but tyre tracks do grow rather large! Check out some more info on the net. I have heard alot of different lengths, but i do know that he will out groe your alreadfy existing tank.

Did u say it was only a 15 gallon? If sooo, its way tooooo smalll!

Thank you guys for your replies.
I think I'm going to set him up a species tank next week, I know he'll need at least a 75+ later on but I'm in no hurry.
After obtaining him I started doing TONS of net research, which is how I happened across this forum. When I bought him I was unaware of the great size he will reach--that's ok, I had intentions of an arowana in the near sometime future anyway- now I just have to wait a little longer.

if you got a big enough tank you can happily house eels with arowanas.

i have 3 eels in with my red tail gold arowana. a fire and 2 peacocks. i also have a tyre track growing on in another tnak.

So do you think Jardini would be ok, I am a little nervous about their agressivness towards other tankmates.

Whoa.........lets take it back a step first...........

Okay, so weve established that they are big, no VERY big, fish. so priority one is to rehome him right? Have you considered how you wish to lay out the tank? The best way to house him would be in a tank with lots of wood/rock stacks, which could possibly make an arrowana an unwise choice as they require lots of space for swimming, and the last thing you want is to invest in an arrowana and then have it damage itself on some sticking out wood right?

Sorry to slam down on this a bit hard but we have the eel now, and not the arrowana so it is the eel that we must look after

On an end note tho, they are a fantastic fish that should bring yourself hours of joy, it should not take long at all to persuade him/her to hadfeed either. As they get older switch him on to frozen lance fish/prawns and it should put on a little growth spurt

And another thing, you said 75+ gallons would be needed, and I would say nothing short of at very least a 4' X 2' tank, and preferrably larger, in the neighborhood of 180 gallons or so. Even that may be too small. ;)

Oh yes, and NO a jardini would not work! You should know this! Spiny eels are very peaceful fish, and should not be subjected to the wrath of a jardini. :(

mmmmm im forced to agree with bgg on this one, jardinis are by far the most aggressive arrowana, a more suitable tank mate would be flag tail prochilodus or if you have ur heart set on an arrowana try a black one, but please not a jardinii

(in case ur wonderin i did a little research when i came back from work, i urge you to check out the entry on arrowanas in the fish index)

Wow. Sorry to scare you guys with such an uninstructed question, thanks for all the thoughtful replies. I wouldn't ever dream of subjecting my pets to harm or stress. And if it is to set more at ease, I am EXTREMELY careful with what I use in setting up my tanks- always I consider shape, edges, and possible injuries... so far so good.

My husband says no fish that eat other fish (he can't even watch the eel eat bloodworms), but I showed him a picture of a silver S. Rhombeus and he said "OK" :D . He also likes the silver aro, and I certainly miss taking care of my big tanks, but like I said- no hurry.

how big are your peacocks? I have a good 14 inch tyre track and fire eel but bought my first ever pea cocks. unlike other two they have never come out of sand and I haven't seem them eat!! are yours like taht

My peackock ells are both about 6-7inch and are out all the time, just a few minutes ago i went to check on them and they were ontop of my rays  the fire eel hides away more but when it comes to feeding time he's out like a shot.

the peacock eels very rarely dig down. I'ved also got a tyre track in my 90 gallon which is currently growing on for the big tank as he can't play with the big boys yet!!

your best option to keep an arowana with them is either a black arowana which are very hard to come by or a asian arowana which are hard to come by and carry quite a price tag.

I keep my asian arowana as in my sig with my eels and lots of others with no problems at all.

I think CFC has a few eels in with his jardini arowana but don't quote me on it, he has his stock in his profile.

but where ever you decided to go with this the tyre track requires atleast a 180gallon tank (6x2x2) but as with everything bigger is better.
