I was parusing at the lfs today and I was thinking about a couple new cichlids to put in my big cichlid tank. I'm looking at a msc african cichlid tank and there was a rainbowfish in it!! I asked the lfs guy what a rainbowfish was doing in with african cichlids three times it's size. He said oh thats not a rainbowfish it's an african cichlid. hmpff. anyways had to buy him and put him in my community tank. I was wondering if anyone had an idea on what kind he is so i can get him some buddies eventually. :)

Thanks for the link but I don't think he really looks like any of those :( I didn't see a blue one with red fins, and his body shape is a bit different...I did a quick internet search before I posted, it didn't really turn up anything.

Could be a Banded Rainbowfish -Melanotaenia trifasciata. Their true colours tend to fade when stressed so that could explain the difference. Check out Here For good info on rainbows

looks quite a lot like the Neon rainbow, but as said previously they are quite sneaky at changing their colours! Lovely fish though, Rainbows are underated!

Looks like a young Praecox

After some more internet searching that's what I thought too. It's kind of hard to tell because he doesn't really have any fins left. I got some friends for him the other day that were labelled as 'australian rainbow fish' I thought they were the same kind but I got them home and they're totally different! lol so I still need to get him some buddies
