i wasn't sure where to post this, but I figured that most people will come to this board, and be able to help me :/

My new blue neon dwarf gourami died in the night :( . in the evening, he was at the bottom of the tank, gasping for air and lying on his side :? . The tank is the right temp, but I’ve never checked for ammonia or nitrIte:(. Should I go out and buy a test kit to do a check now  ? Last Friday, I added a few new plants, which I washed thoroughly. Could they have had something on them, even though they were washed? :( None of my other fish have the symptoms now. -_- thank you in advance

dad had a close look at it (i couldn't bare too  ) and he says the one of the gills had a white opaque jelly like gooey substance on it. what is it?!?! :-( :-( :-(

*bump*

update - other fish seem ok :/ hope it stays that way. any ideas though??

You should really have test kits as the first questions asked when something like this happens are for water parameters. Without this info it's very difficult to guess what happened. Was he old? I doubt very much that the plants had anything to do with it.

Do you change your water often? If not metals could build up and fish can die from them.

i know i should, but i've just never used them :/ .

and i only got him last week :-(
