I went to maiden head aquatics yesterday looking for bettas, I found one in a tank whos fins were torn up pretty bad and was almost white on the body but had a slight shade of purple, 2 large dark purple stripes going down its body.

I thought he was male at first but I started to think maybe i had a female here because of the stripes. Anyway turns out that the poor thing was very pale because after about an hour in his new tank he has gone dark purple with an almost black head, purple/blue fins and a top fin which is blue with blue spots lol very pretty i'm very sure hes male now hes perked up. I will try and get a pic up of him later tonight, i'm pretty sure he would have died if i hadnt of had him.

I am really starting to wonder if it is male or female, maybe you can help when i get a pic up. Colours gone weak again and the purple stripes are visible, do males have stripes like the females?

Yep.
Males get stripes when they're stressed, but usually not as easily as females do.
Look underneath him/her right behind the ventrals.
Do you see a little white spot there hanging down just a tad bit?

thats very unsual to hear that a maidenhead aquatics treat fish like that the one near me is great and so are other maidenhead aquatic si have been to

My CT male gets stripes whenever I mve him for water changes. When you get pics up I will try to help you.

thats a bummer, after putting him into some clean water you would think that he could only get better -_- im sry to hear that, he sounds liek a really nice fish

Its morning and hes still alive! i'm not sure what else i can do for him. hes just still all the time and he wont eat now, he will only move to breathe, i dont think hes having trouble doing that though. :-( I hope he gets better, I only want to put a pic up here if hes going to make it.

Have you added salt or anything to his water? One thing I would do would be lower his water so he can breathe easier. Also make sure he is warm, so he can spend his energy on recovering rather than on just trying to survive.

Do you see anything else obvously wrong with him? any spots, white fuzzy stuff, etc? Maybe tempt him with some blood worms if you have them on hand?

I'm giving him both fresh frozen blood worms and betta flakes, which he wont eat right now :( I put some stress coat in because his fins are all torn and he has a bit of white stringy stuff on his back so i put in some anti fungus stuff. I havnt got salt right now to put in.

Maidenhead aquatics in Crosey? or Cardiff?

I hate the one in Crosey, ive seen bettas in there in tanks full of guppies, platies and mollies before.

The times ive been in there they've had the bettas in tanks next to each other and they told me that it didnt matter because they are normally sold within 3/4 days.

BTW - congratulations on ur resuce :D
