My neon tetra is ill it has a white spot near its tail under its gills are red and its gasping for air i checked my water and its fine and none of the other fish seem to be affevted so i put him in a separate tank. Does anyone know whats wrong and how to help it?

i have a 3ft tank with only 6 neon and 4 congo tetras i just checked my water again
ammonia 0.0 mg\l
nitrite 0.0 mg\l
nitrate 5 ppm
ph 7.5

my small tank was filled with water from my large tank and they register the same.

Does the white thing look like a grain of salt? If so then it is probably whie spot or ich....

For now, I would put some aquarium salt in the tank in an amount suggested on the package (buy this from your LFS) ans turn your heater temperature up to around 30degC....

Also, some pictures might help

I know its not white spot and the spot on its back is more like a lump that is white in coulour and bigger than a grain of salt. I'm more concerned about the redness round the gills and the gasping for air. I do have an air curtain and 3 air stones in the tank

could be gill flukes, this usually causes fast breathing with a redness around the gill plates. But that bump has me bothered as it could indicate another parasite that is causing the fish to breathe hard. I would try to isolate the fish if possible and treat it with a parasite med. HTH

that happend to my neon sometime back i toke him to the fish shop where i got him and they told me that it happens when its old he died after a week or so. :-(

I would recommend not using salt as neons cant process the salt properly. It makes their kidneys overwork and this may not kill them now but it definitely stresses them and can bring on other problems.

I you read my first post i have isolated him into his own tank i did that as soon as i saw he was sick. I wasnt sure what to do so i went to the pet shop and found methylene blue it says on the box that it is an anti-fungal agent with antiseptic healing properties and it is effective against a variety of parasites including flukes and is a rapid aid to respiration. My little neon is more active and the redness has gone down a bit, the only problem is he's still gasping for air and still has the pale white patch on his tail but its not a bump any more it looks more like a pale white patch.

The lack of color in the bands of neons can indicate Neon Tetra disease this is not treatable. But it may not be what your fish has, so just keep it isolated and see if the med helps. Good Luck :)

 my little fish has perked up hes now swimming alot better and the redness has went down alot and hes eating better today still has the white spot on his tail so ill keep him isolated for a little longer will keep you posted and thanx for all your help :D
