Well I've had an old Mirabello 70 for a while which I was using as a guppy tank. The Tank is sooo old and broken, the only thing that works is the light the inbuilt filter and heater broke years ago. Anyway after I gave up on the guppies, I tore the tank down added a small filter, a couple of pices of broken pot and shoved a yabby in to keep the tank cycled.
I now want to make the tank a cichlid tank, so was time to change some things. The first change was getting rid of the old heater and filter, I'm no good with electronics so I've just hung them outside the tank where they can't be seen.
The other thing was a filter I wanted more media but because of the lid on the mirabello I couldnt add a a normal sump with overflow. So Instead this is what I ahve, water is pumped out, into the 10l tub, it first goes into the little circular container which is filled with filter floss for mechanical filtration, theres holes in the base of it. Then through the gravel (some of the best media I've used) into the open area which will houses heaters and back to the tank.
The output tube is my favorite thing LOL, It acts as a continuous siphon, it dosnt need to be specially started, as soon as the water level rises above the highest peak it starts and continually siphons rather then acting as an overflow.
What the tank had been before I tore it down
What it is now (excuse the mess, have you ever heard of neat crayfish?)
The filter area, the little tube going into the hood is the siphon/output, the big tube is the input
A Better pic
What do you guys think? I quite like it, the tank needs a backing, gravel and some scape but for now it'll stay pretty bare.
