I don't only keep shrimp, I have some fish too! I've written quite a long post about the tank so if you want just skip this bit to get to the photos at the end of the post!
About the Tank
This is my Jewel Vision 180 tank that was a Christmas present and was set up over new year weekend 2008. I planted it from the outset and have slowly stocked it up starting with the Albino Corys and some MTS that lived with my Betta at the time along with some of the filter media to cycle the tank. My next additions were some bronze corys a week or so later and some shrimp (including my CRS) about 2 weeks after that.
By the end of feb it contained my Betta Splendens after I put him in this tank while cleaning his tank. He didn't want to get back out, hiding when i went near the tank, so I moved the CRS to what was his tank! He lived in here happily for a couple of months until the filter got loose and he got stuck behind it. I've fixed the filter to stop it happening again and it all looks safe now. While he was in there I added the Black Harlequin Rasboras as they were recommended as Betta safe. I can say for the 6 weeks they lived together they were nice and friendly to each other.
The most recent additions were two bargain Corys(1 Schwartzi and 1 Sterbai) who were cheap because they were the last ones of each species in the shop. They are currently shoaling with my bronze corys but I plan to get them some friends of the same species when i next find them in a LFS. After seeing some Sterbai in another LFS I'm not certain that is what it is. Anybody got any ideas?
I was also looking for a centerpiece fish to replace my Betta Splendens and was considering Rainbow fish or a pair of Gourami. It looks like brooksbychris has the perfect answer in the Betta Simplex he is breeding that should be ready in a few months. There isn't much information available on these fish but they have the look of a plakat betta but they are peaceful mouthbrooders.
Tank Setup
The tank is a Juwel Vision 180, this is approx 47 US Gallons. I am using the internal filter and a replacement heater. I am using the standard 2 x 25W bulbs built into the hood. There is no CO2 and i'm only dosing the plants with Nutrafin Plantgro when i do a water change. The black backing is just a black bin bag taped in place! I try to keep the temperature at 26/27 C.
The Substrate is Eco-complete for the planted areas at the back half of the tank and sand in front of the wood and in the left corner for the corys. The front corner originally had some hairgrass growing there. It was starting to carpet and the original plants had sent out runners but my corys kept digging them up so I've decided they know best and have pulled it out and spread the sand out. The two substrates are starting to mix slightly. While they are mostly separate, the sand has spread out to the sides and the are quite a few eco-complete stones sitting on top of the sand
Decoration is 1 large piece of bogwood with lots of moss and Java Fern growing on it, a Coconut shell with moss and 3 small stones dividing the sand from the Eco-complete.
Future plans are to replace the light bulbs with some from here and to remove some of the plants from the rear left and add some kind of hardscape and/or some Cryptocoryne cordata. I want to add some Moss to the stones dividing the sand and Eco-complete too.
