I put some PVC pipe in there this afternoon without incident. he swims away when my hands are in the tank, but if I look at him he gets mad!

yes, thats his wifey in the background. I think she wants to get down, as her egg tube is visible, but i reckon he doesnt think its safe enough yet, as he is defending his tank from me lol
