Well in my humble opinion it appears he's being dominated, not sick.  I bet if you moved him to another tank where he was the "alpha" male he'd be much happier.  Male Gouramis like to be the most dominant fish in the tank.  They're still okay when they aren't but why not try to make him happiest?  I know you already said you can't have another tank.............but maybe you can set up a 10 gallon for him?  I successfully kept a large male Powder Blue Dwarf with Fancy Guppies, Glowlights & a Snail in a 10 gallon.  It's not the best size tank for him but far better than letting him get picked on isn't it?

At pet sores they typically keep 5-10 male Dwarf G's in one tank that can't be larger than 20 gallons and it appears to work, but that's because there are so many of them in such a small place that the alpha male can't just pick on one fish.  Then someone comes along and buys 2 or 3 of them and put them in their own tank and all hell breaks loose, even if the tank is significantly larger than the one you got them from.  Happens all the time with these beautiful fish unfortunately.

Okay, after some google-ing I think he is down in the dumps because of the dominant male Dwarf Gourami. I am going to move him to my (now) spare 30L tank. However, the closest time I can buy a heater is Friday. I hope he survives till then but he is wasting away! :( I will also buy aquarium salt then to add to his new tank (dw I have kept it running so its already cycled - has been set up for like 2 years).

Does the 30 liter tank have fish in it?  I hope so, or the good bacteria likely died off already.  Shouldn't really be too much of a problem though since you can take a bit of the felt from your larger tank to spike the cycle if necessary.

Yeh I have left a couple small fish to keep the bacteria gowing. Now my gourami seems to be changing colour - he has dark patches on his head. I think its the iridovirus often found in dwarf gouramis :( I will treat him for bacteria infection anyway, and hope he survives

Sorry to hear that, dark patches are one of the signs my Flame Dwarf showed before it died, probably of DGD.  In fact one whole side of him got darker while the other remained normal.  Good luck with him.

Unfortunately the poor little guy died today :( he showed the dark patches the day before he died, I suspect all of this was dwarf gourami disease. So unfair!

So sorry about your loss.  Dwarf Gouramis hare especially hard to lose because they have so much personality and attitude.

Hopefully your other Dwarf G hasn't been infected.  Keep a close eye on him and help keep his immune system up by keeping him happy, and keeping his water clean.
