:dunno: not sure of the question, but from what you asked, not sure why she isnt cleaning out the tank, probably she doesnt want to? It sounds like she has it over stocked. If you have a specific question please give details and try taking caps lock off please ....thanks

i think he is asking why he has done everything perfectly and still has problems yet his wifes friend doesn't take care of her tank at all and her fish are great

i really don't know how to answer this,
i have seen it as well
all i can think is that thats the way life goes
its like how the guy who already has a good job wins the lottery and the guy supporting 3 kids and a lazy wife gets laid off
its just the way things go
but it all balances in the end
so my advise to you it to keep up with your tank
and one day you will be rewarded with beautiful thriving fish and a stunning tank
she probably has hearty fish that can live in the crummiest conditions (although still a really bad idea to do so  )

by the way,
her tank is WAY overstocked

i no she is well over stocked shes got lots of plattys that keep breeding and thats another thing she uses no live bearing traps the fish breed in the open tank and none of the little fry die when mine breed the little fry get eaten straight away :dunno:

I have seen many of these tanks running.

But I can say even if I wouldn’t never run a tank like this you can..

Reason..

NO3 can be removed from the water without water changes, algae would use it plant (don’t think there would be any) also uses it all.
There are more algae in any tank than you could see

Water evaporates out of the water leaving all the dissolved element in the tank making the water only harder every time you just add water.. this is not always a bad thing, Algae can also use lots of these dissolved salt to an extremely large extend.

in a planted aquariums THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE..

first off is if you add Fe (iron) to your tank or your local water supply has some, don’t wait more that 2 week to do a 25% water change..
I might be off a bit but FeO2 or Fe2O3 turn into FeO3 in a short time and is then useless to plant and only build up to a toxic level

So I would say even it has a lot to do with luck there is always these tank that seems to "work" my Neighbor has the exact same setup, he is every overstocked, no lights no water change, the cheapest gold fish food, yet his platys breeds like rabbits?

There is lots on the krib about this and why is shouldnt work, but very little to why is does work??
Also if you have the same setup just very lightly stock with fish it doesnt work why??

You can overstock a tank with no problems if your filtration is good enough to remove all the ammonia and nitrites, You don't need water changes to remove Nitrates if you got enough plants comsuming them. If the plants take up all the Nitrate, there is nothing left for algae to feed on, therefor no algae.

A PERFECT ECOSYSTEM, which of course doesn't make sense to most of us. HEHEHE

but this only applys if you add distilled water to replace water that evaporates??

what about all the stuff that doesnt evaporates like salts and calsium and iron and and and and and ??

Yes.. I have to add nitrates to my tank to keep the NO3 levels in my tank 10ppm for my plant growth.
but I also add lots of other stuff that cant be used 100%

I know of people who never do water changes, they work in a pet shop and they told me once.

I think it can work to be honest. Also a bit of luck comes in handy. When I set up my first tank I didn't do water changes etc. Even when I upgraded to my 160l I still didn't until about November time.

My fsh were fine through that but it doesn't mean that they were happy.

I'm sure the friend with the 42 gallon has either a huge wet-dry filter or a huge canister filter, then I think it's quite possible.

I know it's frustrating when your fish die and hers just go right on living, but it's part of the circle of life. :) I know someone exactly like that and her fish mostly live. It bothers me.

Thats annoying. I didnt clean out my tank for 2 or 3 weeks and I got Popeye and Ich as well as a dead gourami in my tank. and this woman is way overstocked and her fish live.
