Ok so tonight I ran my first NO-2 test. It's 5 days since I set up the aquarium and 2 days since I added some fish food to get the amonia levels up.

And the result is that I'm up to 0.3mg/l

I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, that I need to add some amonia or more fish food and over the next week get the level up to 1.6mg/l before letting the tank settle and the level drop back down to less than 0.3mg/l.

This weekend I intend to purchase other test kits so I can check the amonia, nitrate, and PH levels etc.

Any thoughts or advice then let me know!

In other news... I tried to put my new drift wood in as the centre piece of my aquarium. No joy I'm afraid, its been soaking in cold water for 48 hours but when i put it in the tank i couldnt get the little thing to stay at the bottom. I've now got it in a bath full of boiling hot water to try again.

There's not really anything we can safely conclude from a single nitrite reading on just the tank. The data we'll need will be ammonia, nitrite, pH and nitrate on the tap water once you get the tests and then the same ones on the tank and then the trends from testing the tank twice a day over pretty many days. Any kind of controlled fishless cycle will be pretty difficult with fish food rather than pure ammonia. Your first fishless cycle is going to be hard enough, even doing it the more predictable way.
