I stripped and rescaped my 240l tank at the weekend and took some fish to the lfs. I popped in to pick up the bucket today and I had a look around as you do. The calvus I had my eye on were still there but there were also a load of different Julidochromis sp which had been brought in by someone who didn't want them. They were unlabelled and unpriced but after enquiries, I got a male and female transcriptus (I think!) plus their 4 fry for £36. Approx 3 inches long, already paired and it works out at £6 per fish! Result! So the first Tanganyikan inhabitants are in situ, hurrah!

Good point! I've not got any pics yet as they are all in hiding at the moment but hopefully they'll be more confident soon so I'll get some photos when I can. Then you can al tell me which julies I actually have!

Well, I've managed a couple of shots of the young Julies as the older ones are still in hiding. Any thoughts as to whether they are transcriptus or not?

I love them anyway, I'm surprised they have the blue fins already!

If they dont get bigger than 3" then they are lol.
There is a marlieri gombe version thats similar sized but im sure they are transcriptus, which ones though i dont know. Will help with pics of the larger ones. cheers

I'll keep trying for the adults but I'm hardly seeing them at the moment. One was out earlier but the tank lights were off so I culdn't get a photo. Thanks for the input!

I've just managed to get a few terrible shots of the adults before the battery went on my camera  . I've had to lighten them a bit so the markings are more visible.

Apologies for the water marks on the glass

I was pointed toward them being Julidochromis marlieri by EliseW and after some research came across this on another site:

"The stripe under the eye and the vertical barring both suggest marlieri.

Regani have the stripe under the eye, but no vertical barring.

Ornatus and transcriptus, no stripe under the eye.

Transcriptus has the vertical barring, ornatus no."

So, my belief is marlieri going on this... though aparrently J marlieri/transcriptus "Gombi" is smaller but still has the stripe under the eye

It has been said on a specialist forum that the marlieri have a second stripe under the eye, making a total of three horizontal stripes (I misunderstood the previous quote aparrently) so it appears they are transcriptus after all!
