I decided that today is going to be the day that i get my first betta spawn

My largest female is looking plump and nicely coloured, five of my males are all eating well, and bubble nested up. All have been fed on mostly bloodworm recently.

I just set up a 5 gallon hex as the spawning tank with no substrate. Its got established tank water in it, should i add some plants too?

Then the plan is to then select a male, and from here on in i need some advice.

How long do i leave the male in the tank before introducing the female in the cup, and how do i know when she is ready.

How do i know if its going to be successfull. When do i remove the female, etc etc :D

Any advice here would be great.

This spawn is my first attempt for experience as i am planning on breeding some HM and crowntails im going to import later this year.

Cheers!!

well it seems like you still have a bit of research to do :) check out the pinned topic at the top of this forum, it gives a step by step walk through of the entire breedingp rocess, adn you should probably print it out or something and have it on hand wiht you so you'll know how to manage the whole thing through

But to asnwer your questions, yes you will have to have more plants in there, as the feamle will need some kind of space to hide (flower pot, plants, etc). A sponge filter will also be nice, and a heater is necessary so you can keep the temperature constant.

A cup cut in half will be good for hte male to build his nest under. As for the rest of your questions, it'll be answered veyr nicely if you read the pinned article at the top of the page

agreed, maybe a little more research, these are things that you should know before you start to breed (via research) not to pound on you but there is a great pinned article up on top. The one thing you asked which isnt covered in that topic is the tank water. Yes established (healthy) tank water is good. I used it in my spawn tank and I am trying new water in my next spawn, just using an established filter in this tank. I am no expert by any means and will be glad to help but basic stuff is asked everyday and is in the topic. As for releasing the female it depends I have read several things on the subject and each breeeder says something different. Welcome to the world of breeding but please read up on this and good luck. I am sure everyone will be glad to asnswer any question if you need help or clarification. Thanks
