this morning while trying to clean up my room after my qaurantine tank cracked(i only had it set up for not even 30 min) i looked over at my nano tank and the water was a bit cloudy. i went closer and noticed my feather duster was secreating some type of fluid that made the water cloudy really quickly. it looked like it was smokeing(if that were possible underwater). it didnt seem to affect any of the inhabbitants at all. anyone know or have an idea what happened? is it something i need to be worried about?

I think its spawning :hey:

At or after spawning time, the feather duster may shed its tentacles, in order to avoid eating its young. The spawn will be an excellent food for any corals or other filterfeeder.

If it was shooting ut a cloudy substance then it was spawning, if it was a chunky substance it probably wasn't. Hope its a spawn, I love the look of little feather dusters. and they do spawn in aquariums, althought if its a really big one it might lead to a creash chances are that it will not.

I do however think that Chestnut moray may be wrong about the "tenticles" (more properly known and a crown) in open oceans a fan worm doesn't really come accross its own larve after it spews them out, I would think that they may loose there crown because of the stress involved in all the nutrients put into the water from dead and dyeing larval offspring.

it was cloudy......i have talked with the owner of a lfs that i go to regularly and he thinks the same think.......i think its really cool that it spawned. unfortunetly i havent seen any new feather dusters any where though so all the larva died or got eaten. btw does anyone have a pic of feather duster larva.......this morning i caught a climpse of a couple of little things crawling on the LR.....i was thinking they were some kind of pod or larva from something.

ya it was right when i turned the lights on. i turned em on after i woke up and i saw something moving and looked down and saw em scutiling away into the holes in the LR.

after spawn those little worms that dont get eaten will go into the liverock, and given time will emerge as tiny little fan worms, but they will only be about 2-3mm at this point so you probably wont notice them at first.
