happy to say ive finally conquered the red slime in my tank. how you ask? heres a series of events that led to my domination.
first it began, sand bed and live rock slowly being consumed by a red slime, cyanobacteria.
after searching the internet i came up with possible solutions such as increasing flow rate in the areas it grew, using a phosphate reducer (rowaphos), using chaeto in the fuge, and using ro-di water...i believe none of these did the trick. i had the flow, ran the rowaphos for over a month, and added a heaping amount of chaeto, still to no avail.
so this week i bought a fully setup 75g from a guy and moved some stuff from his tank to my cyano infested tank, including 100 pounds of live fiji. just so happened that this live fiji had caulerpa (macroalgae) growing all over the place, some might not like this stuff but it sure beats other algaes! i strongly believe this was the cure. i went from 80% of my sandbed being covered in the red slime for a month straight, to about 5% coverage after only 4 days since the caulerpa was added to the tank. the caulerpa, being the more dominant algae consumes the phosphates before the cyano can get to them and the cyano dies. to anyone with a cyano problem, i recommend adding a good amount of caulerpa to your tank!
