i decided to build a skimmer today for my new nano hex. total cost $20. i designed it not knowing if it would actually work having never built a skimmer before, but i used the basic concept of the euro reef skimmer. the body is made of 2" pvc, with a 1/2" inlet connected to a penguin powerhead in the tnak, and a 3/4" outlet. i didnt know the collection cup would be so massive until i actually put it next to the tank, so i think i will replace the collection cup tommorow with a simple 2" coupler at the top, since the collection fluid will be draining to a seperate collection jar anyway; it will be a lot easier on the eyes..

heres a pic i snapped before putting the top half on. the pipe coming in from the left side is the outlet, it 90's down to about a 1/2" from the bottom, similar to the euroreef, which sucks the water out of the skimmer back to the tank. the right pipe is the inlet pipe from the pump, with a 45 at the tip to create some "whirl" inside the body. in order to get the pipes through the reducers on either side of the 2" pvc cross, i bored out the lips so the pipes could push straight through the reducer, into the skimmer body.

ok ima sound like a noob here, what does this skimmer actually do for your tank??

and an off topic question, how much in total costs did your 200 gallon cost you so far? Its really nice, i love the depth and aquascaping!

you run a tube from the outlet of a powerhead inside the tank to the body of the protein skimmer. the powerhead also has a small inlet for an airline tube that runs up above the water and sucks in air, which makes a water/air bubble mix being propelled into the skimmer. these air bubbles travel up the water column inside the skimmer up to that small grey pipe you see inside the cup on top, and pop at the surface. when the air bubbles travel up the water they collect "bad stuff" in the form of a film around the bubbles, therefore when they pop they release this "bad film" and it gets caught in the collection cup. over time the collection cup fills with bad smelling green slime. there is somewhat of an obsession with the amount of gunk one can pull from their tank. thats why you see online photo contests of cups full of green slime.

Any chance of some blue prints? looks very interesting!
