i got sum danios recently n when the lites r out they seem 2 swim aroound n play n when i turn the lites on n my room they go into the school n zombie mode n just hover in a pack till the lites go out again. is this normal behaviour?

Its the opposite to how mine behave. They are the most active fish I have and love to rush about everywhere when the light os on. Out of interest, how many do you have? 6+ is best. And what tank size?

i got 3 yesterday just 2 get the cycle goin, imma get 2more in friday. i didnt want 2 introduce 2 much n throw the cycle off. 29 gal

hehe thats how I started my main tank off, the one in sig, started with three danios after a week I added another six. One died after it wedged itself between a bit of slate and the glass. Once you have got more you will see a change in behaviour they love a crowd. But dont rush it leave it at least a week b4 adding more and dont add anything else yet. Oh and get a test kit so you know when the amonia, nitrite and nitrate are at the right levels (see pinned topic on cycling).

Best of luck with the tank :)

When to do you turn the lights on/off? When I first got my 5 zebra danios (getting old now) I kept them in a 20 gallon tank without lights for 2 weeks. They settled down great, got used to their surroundings and I then installed and switched on the lights for the first time. They became even more lively than they were before and will now get up and go to sleep in time with the lights. I use a timer to keep the lights on from 7am to 7pm and they then switch off for the night.

What I would suggest is to keep the lighting on/off times regular. A timer would be very useful for this. Then just give them time. They have only been in the tank a few days so they still need some time to get used to their new environment and become accustomed to the new routine. Keeping things regular will make them feel more comfortable. Also, to emphasise night time - daytime cycles, I would cover the tank so it is completely dark at night. Then uncover and switch on the lights in the morning. They should eventualy adapt and you can stop covering the tank. :)

i got the kit, 2day is day 6, yesterdays readings were, nitrate 10, nitrite 0 and amonia 0.50

I got a timer for mine
8am to 10pm light

My guppies usually swim around all day and when lights go off they slowly settle down until they turn on in the morning.

My molly rests when lights are out and when they're on he'll usually swim a bit, then relax, then awim again, relax. He's a pretty boring fish all in all :p

I'll have to get him a few females, the one i had died last week :(

yvez9 you might want to rethinking the hours of lighting. 14 hours is asking for Algae.. .

I run mine from 9AM to 8PM w/ a 1/2 hour siesta in the afternoon from 1 to 1:30.

I am building up algea on my glass...
I was going to get a algea eater to control it though...
I want to enjoy my fish until I'm ready to go to bed, that's why I leave it on until 10pm
Yoou think I should turn on the lights at around 10am?

12 hours or less is always best. 10AM to 10PM should be fine.
